From the late Qing Dynasty to the early stage of Republic of China, while Chinese traditional books had been on the decline in the unprecedented culture change, modern books sprang up based on western modern industry producing technology and material. In spite of a short time span, this period is of historic and far-reaching significance being the setting forth one.With document analysis methodology, comparative and inductive method, material object research and so on, this dissertation is a detailed and accurate investigation of the course of Chinese book design transforming from traditional style to modern style. At the same time, it also analyzes the process of Chinese book design from the perspective of paradigm theory, inspects the changing form of Chinese book design in the new system from the combined angle of design art and design practice aesthetics, attempts to explore the relevant design paradigm from book forms closely related to modernity transformation, to reveal the complex characteristics of Chinese book design of the early stage in the compound context interwoven by publication history, book history, and society history of modern times and the transforming trail and historic meaning in order to explore the core value and the inner drive of Chinese modern books design.
