In 1922, Ouyang Jingwu established the Chinese Inner Studies Institute when traditional Chinese Buddhism has enduring a hard time. The institution was far different from traditional Buddhism institutions by focused on modern Buddhism education, research and edit scripts. The purpose of its education was "fulfill humanity" by the theories of "return to India Buddhism" and "true educate". Ouyang Jingwu carried his "five branches of Buddhism" through the institution and made the five as a complete education system. The intuition educated both monk and layman when focused on the later one which made it became the most important center of Buddhist learning for layman in China. By the method of "education through carve scripts", the institution educated more than 200 students in almost 30 years. During that time, three sets of "Zangyao(藏要)"have published by the institution. All the features made The Chinese Inner Studies Institute very special and important in Buddhism academia.This dissertation tries to explore the detail history of Chinese Inner Studies Institute and the Buddhism education theory of its founder-Ouyang Jingwu. The dissertation takes Ouyang as a Buddhism educationist, focused on all aspects of his education activities:the foudation of his educations theory, the purpose of education, the system of education and the practice of education, and put them in order finally. The special features of "educate by carving scripts" are unveiled.This dissertation also puts Ouyang and Chinese Inner Studies Institute in the background of modern China academia. Through Ouyang, the dissertation explores celebrates of scholars such as Yang Wenhui, Zhang Taiyan and Shen Zengzhi, researches the layman Buddhism in modern China.
