August Wilhelm Ambros, Friedrich von Hausegger, Hermann Kretzschmar and Arnold Schering were major figures of German and Austrian musicology in the history of the mid 19th century to the early 20th century. The dissertation focuses on their main influential issue in "Heteronomie", and holds a comprehensive discussion on their Music Aesthetics.The dissertation is divided into five parts:an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The introduction is concerned about the cause of selecting the subject, domestic and international research situation of the subject, as well as aesthetic category of "Heteronomie" and "Autonomie". The first chapter discusses Ambros' Music Aesthetics. It mainly analyzes the boundaries of music and poetry, as well as compared Ambros' with Eduard Hanslick's different opinions about Wagner's "Gesamtkunstwerk", "Inhalt" and "Form"of music etc. In the second one, the dissertation discusses Hausegger's Music Aesthetics about the origin of music, "Spiel" and "Mitempfindung", "Kunstreligion" and the music as "Ausdruck". The third Chapter discusses Kretzschar's Hermeneutik and Schering's Symbolism. The author emphasizes the debate between Ambros, Hausegger and Hanslick in the first and second Chapter, while in the third chapter, the dissertation describes Kretzschmar and Schering's interpretation of J.S.Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven's music according to their "praktische Muskasthetik". The conclusion summarizes the characteristics of the four musicologists, analyzes "Ausdruck" of music, "poetisch" and "poetisieren" of music, "Hermeneutik" of music as well as "Autonomie" and "Heteronomie"of music comprehensively, points out the limitation of partition of "Heteronomie" and "Autonomie", and affirms the four musicologists' historical achievements.
