As a chain of study on the female literature, this thesis concentrates on heroin novels that mass produced both in China and Korea, and compares woman consciousness.Hong Gyewol-Jeon and A Tale of Orchid Dream were both created in the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th century, which closing women's novels both in China and Korea. As the representative novels these two concentrate on expressing most serious conflicts between man and woman and most clear woman consciousness.On narrative point of view, these two novels focus on capable women's depression from sex discrimination system after marriage, who disguised as men and work very actively in society before marriage. The seriousness of problem lies in critics on patriarchal system heroin's struggling against sex discrimination with pictures. In fact, considering the situation that the contact between man and woman are very strictly controlled at that time, such heroin with much greater power than man in the novel could not exist in reality. The main idea itself is unconventional that actively breaking women's identity and dreaming of resistance against patriarchal system. These novels describe the things that impossible in reality and expressed dream of depressed women as to achieve women's growth.Both of these novels indicate the causes of conflicts between man and woman in patriarchal system, however, the solving methods or ending are different. The purpose of this thesis is to indicate correct prospect through grasping different women consciousness inherited in these two novels with different forms, concentrating on structure of conflicts. The author hopes to contribute to establish overall view on sex discrimination at that time by researching similarities and differences between women's intentions in Korea and China where patriarchal system is rooted deeply in Confucian culture zone.In article one, the author reviews on existing study on these two novels and indicates purpose and studying methods.In article two, the author compares the social and literature causes of appearance of heroin novels in Korea and China.In article three, the author compares narrative structure of these two heroin novels, analyzes features of narrative structure, and extracts conflict structure-major point of this thesis. the author describes the conditions of man and woman before and after marriage as to prepare for analysis on conflict between man and woman after marriage. The author narrates on heroin's disguise and studying with hero, heroin's excellent social activity and common hero, exposure of woman identity and marriage. Man don't mind and even respect heroin'ability because she disguised as man and socially very active before marriage. However, man's attitude towards heroin start to changing with exposure of heroin's identity and conflicts become more serious after marriage in both novels.In article four, the author studies on conflicts between man and woman after marriage. The author compares causes, resolution methods and end of conflicts in detail. Firstly, conflicts include inside and outside causes. The outside causes lie in prejudice and depress on heroin from hero, however the inner causes lie in patriarchal system that depressing and discriminating between man and woman. Secondly, there exist differences in solving conflicts:Hong Gyewol aggressively overcomes patriarchal system, fights against her husband and gets back her rights; however, Song Baozhu is frustrated by patriarchal system, submits to her husband and feels loosing herself. The ends are different too. It emphasizes Gyewol's activeness and progressiveness with happy ending, on the contrast A Tale of Orchid Dream is and unsolved ending. Bad condition of Song Baozhu is emphasized in novel with falling ending. Then it develops into rapid growing ending against readers'expectation, which is the feature of A Tale of Orchid Dream. The falling ending of Baozhu's death reflects that women at that time dream of escaping depression from men but have to be frustrated. These novels make women readers understand their problems and identities objectively and face their reality. Growing ending reflects the gradual enhancing trend of women's identity as to encourage women readers, and indicates possibility of escaping from such depression. Novels compromise between falling and growing end, progressive with reality.In article five, the author describes the differences of conflicts between two novels from creative motives and opinions on women with different expressive methods.This thesis is the first attempt to compare Chinese and Korean heroin, therefore there has to exist fragmentary and limit. On the basis of this study , the author will continue to studying on heroin literature including differen t genres and discuss on common and different elements of women consciou sness in Korean and Chinese novels. Moreover, the author tries to contribut e to women literature as well as the comparative literature between two cou ntries.
