| Rice is the most important grain crop in China. For a long time, indica rice has been cultivated as major species, while japonica rice accounts for small proportion. Until 1980, the sown area of japonica rice in our country was only 11 percent of total rice, and the output of it was merely 10.76 percent. In recent 20 years, the japonica rice production has been developing relatively fast, by 1990 the sown area of it was 16 per cent of the total area of rice, the output was 17.76 per cent of the total output of rice; In 2001, they rose to 23.13 per cent and 25.83 per cent respectively. What promoted the japonica rice industry to develop so rapidly that in the case of presently structural adjustment in agriculture, it still keep prosperous development. This paper is intended to research the production, consumption, trade of japonica rice from the aspect of overall industry, and to point out its induced factors and changing rules of development, and put forward decision-making suggestions on confronting the challenge of China joining to the WTO, promoting japonica rice industry's realization of new resplendence in the new century.Firstly, this paper has to solve the problem of how to separate the data of japonica rice from rice, for until now the authorities hasn't published japonica rice production statistical data in China. By means of overall survey, typical survey and the collection of correlated statistic materials, this paper calculates the sown area and output of japonica rice of every one of japonica rice production provinces and all over the country, obtains the dates of consumption and trade of japonica rice in China and the world. Using these dates, the study develops a supply-demand analysis system (consists of Cobb-Douglas Production Function ModeK Nerlovian Supply Response Model and Double Log Demand Function Model) to point out all the important factors affecting the supply and demand of japonica rice in China and the extent of influence respectively, especially the paper analyzed the trade status and international competitiveness of japonica rice thoroughly under the framework of china's joining to the WTO, and according to the analysis of development trend and natura1. economic and social factors of influencing japonica rice industry, predicts the development of japonica rice industry in 2005 and 2010, brings forward some of strategies and suggestions for the future development of japonica rice industry.Rice is one of the primary grain crops in the world, while the ratio of japonica rice to rice is very low, by 2001 the world sown area of japonica rice was10,844,860 ha, accounting for 7.16 percent of the paddy harvest acreage, and the output of it was 72.62 million tons, accounting for 12.25 percent of the total rice output. Due to the very important rule of japonica rice for residents' consumption in some countries or regions (such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and some area of China), and for trade in some countries, japonica rice industry can not be neglected in rice economy in the world.China is the biggest country of rice production and consumption in the world, and the japonica rice industry developing the fastest in the rice industry, by 2001, the sown area of japonica rice reached 6,664,200 ha, accounting for 23.13 per cent of therice total sown area, output was 45.88 million tons, accounting for 25.83 per cent of the total rice output. In the key period of decreasing rice sown area and adjusting in rice species structure, japonica rice production still maintain rapid development. During 1980-2001, the sown area of japonica rice increased 2.79 percent per year, the output increased 5.42 percent per year, in the contrast, in the same period of time the sown area of rice in China fell by 0.77 percent per year, and output increased 1.14 per cent per year. One of the reasons for the fast development of japonica rice industry in China is its higher comparative benefit. In recent years, the production benefit of grain crops remain a dropping trend generally, no exception for japo... |
