This paper tends to make a systematical survey of the travelling population in China(TPC). As a multi-subject and challenging project, this study involves the areas of demography, geography, tourism science, marketing, as well as economics, having both theoretical and practical significance. After over 20 years of tourism development China is now at a critical moment of converting itself from a great regional tourism country to a great world tourism country. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to make a theoretical summary of the tourism development of China in the past 20 years and to explore the feasibility of converting the country's tourism from the previous Quantity-type Tourism(Scale-type) to the Quality-type Tourism(Performance-type) in the future. Demography, or population geography. Therefore, provides a totally new and unique viewing angel for such type of study. This paper is elaborated with bom theoretical presentation and case studies. Theoretically, the achievements of previous related studies on the question of travelling population are fully quoted in the paper with a purpose of making it possible to carry out further studies in this area. Practically, a multi-angled and all-rounded analysis is made on the basis of statistic data of Chinese tourism development in the past two decades to reveal the current features, reason mechanism and development tendency of Chinese travelling population. The paper consists of eight chapters, me brief outline of which is introduced as follows:Chapter one, starting from the background of tourism development, identifies the travelling population, or tourist market from, from the point view of demography. This type of study of travelling population is still at its exploring stage both at home and abroad.Chapter two focuses on the target of study-the travelling population, which refers to tourists whose travel destination is China. Therefore, the study is of theoretical and realistic importance, and helps construct the theoretical frame of TPC theory, reveals its applied prospects and establishs effective approaches to TPC study.Chapter three, which discusses the conception of international travelling population in ChinaQTPC), makes the main body of the theoretical study system. Three areas are discussed in this chapter梒haracteristics of the current ITPC, the cause of ITPC formation, and prospects for further tourism development in China. The study of current situation and basic features of the ITPC involves the quantity, the law of time-space distributions and the structural features of theITPC; the uneven distributions of the ITPC shows how Chinese tourism development has been restricted by such distributions for years; and the structure of the ITPC reveals its special characteristics in sex, age and occupation. The ITPC development is heavily influenced by the factors in areas of politics, economy, social culture, attractions, science and technology and traveler's personality. But, through an analysis of expert inquiry, the writer proves that the factors of attentions, economy and traveler's personality are the three key factors having impacts on the ITPC development at presentA forecast is made in the paper on the development of the ITPC from two aspects. The first is a quantitative calculation on the increase of the ITPC, the formula used beingv = 8-106 ?e01012*y , which leads to a conclusion that an average annual increase of 8% will beproper one; the other aspect turns out to be a qualitative analysis on the structure and distribution of the ITPC.Chapter four discusses domestic travelling population in China(DTPC), which involves the current characteristics of the DTPC, the cause of its formation and the prospects of its future development. The current characteristics cover the quantitative features of the DTPC, the law of time-space distributions and the structure of the DTPC. A great amount of the total population, a high speed increase of the population, synchronous development of the urban and...
