Abstract: Since the 18th century in Europe, theoretical study on forest management has been initiated, resulting in the introduction of para-naturalism and forest legalism of perpetual utilization. In the 19th century, neo-forestry theory and forestry sustainable development theory were established. Benefited from in-depth research on forestry management theory, forestry in developed countries has stepped on the track of virtuous ecological circle. Whereas in developing countries, enormous negative effect has been produced due to population increase and economic development, leading to spoliatory exploitation and severe declination of global forest resources. Meanwhile, the earth has been seriously contaminated by modern industry, modern agriculture and human modern living style, which imperil the very survivalism of human beings directly. Under these two layers of pressure of both vicious environment and decreasing resources, the ecological significance of forest has been given more and more heed to by mankind. International community has reached unanimity in conserving forest, and thereafter, international forestry has been placed on way of sustainable development. For over a hundred years, China has basically not evolved its own forestry development theory. At the end of last century, forestry ecology and its sustainable development research in China were started, motivated by the ever-rising research tide of forestry ecological and sustainable development across the world. At the International Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, China constituted its China Forestry Sustainable Development Strategy in 21 Century. It is this strategy that initiated the development theory of China's modern forestry and China's forestry unprecedented leap-forward theory. These theories have demonstrated quite ideal effect on China's modern forestry development, but they are still short of succession so as to be difficult to disseminate. As far as China's past forestry study is concerned, there was a lack of theoretical research, unable to form a theoretical system in cross-discipline research, as well as to fully understand the new transitional period in new forestry era. This paper, with methods of multi-discipline research and in despite of restrains of country boundaries, will only try to deal with the sole forestry theory, by way of focusing on the topic of modern forestry. This paper, with the integration of theory and practice, will construct modern forestry theory system, elaborating the dialectical relationship between mankind and forestry development and analyzing the global forestry practices to verify this theory system. The entire thesis is composed of an introduction and eight chapters.Chapter One: IntroductionFirst, the significance of this research topic, theory and application is expounded; and then internal and external research trends on modern forestry theory study are elaborated, which help clarify the research orientation, research ideology, research method and the innovation points in this thesis.Chapter Two: The Connotation and Extension of Modern Forestry and the Formation of Its Theory The material foundation of modern forestry is forest. Various explanations of forest function annotate the connotation and extension of modern forestry forest. The connotation of modern forestry refers to the conventionally-sensed industry of forest timber management and other forest produce, i.e. narrowly-sensed forestry. The extension of modern forestry expands to ecological and social benefits from its original natural economical property. By converging the ecological and social benefits of forest, modern forestry has evolved into a social industry―integrating all the senses of economic returns, social benefits, ecological gains, coexistence of mankind and forest, and sustainable development. The foundation of modern forestry theory lies on the facts that forest is indispensable to human society, that mankind relys on forest for its survival, that mankind development depends on forest, t...
