North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is captained by the U.S.A is the biggest military alliance in the current world. Under the situation of magnitude change of the international structure after the end of the Cold War, NATO did not disorganize without the initial catalyzing threat, on the contrary, it continues playing a crucial role in the international political affairs. This paper attempts to proceed with unit level analysis to check the different state security interests of the members of NATO, hopes to figure out the determinants of subsistence and development of NATO after the end of the Cold War. And tries to examine the influence of these crucial factors on the policy choice of the NATO members when facing momentous international conflicts. This thesis reviews three main schools of international relation theory and finds that each one has its explaination on subsistence phenomena of NATO but has its limitation. The paper coalesces these three theories and posits three assumptions to the determinants of subsistence of NATO after the Cold War, that is: 1, The U.S.A as a superpower around the world is the leader of the alliance. The development of NATO accords with American interests. The U.S.A supports the existence of NATO. 2, The alliance furnished the members with mutual security interests and their different needs of self-interests. Most of the leaguers identify with NATO's status and function toward European security. 3, Each of the members has its specific national interests goals. The conformity of their crucial aims affects the situation of stability and development of the alliance. It will be a positive effect to the alliance when they are accorded and it will be a negative one when they are diverged. Based on these outcomes, a tentative forecast is made in the last chapter of the paper on the potential policy the allies would take when Chinese government were forced to resort to arms to solute Taiwan issue and the U.S.A would intervent with massive operation at that time.
