Speaking for Russia itself, how to renew its foreign relations and identify its role in the international system, especially in the European continent would be a point at issue in the very act of the transition of the international structure since the end of the cold war. The EU enlargement pursuing would be very decisive for Russia and the European Union, for how to orientate and improve their bilateral relations is of real interest to not only success of their respective internal transition but also security and stability in the future Europe. Taking the above into consideration, the dissertation from the perspective of civilization and current national interests, based on Russian outlook on Europe in history, makes further analyses on the adjustments and progresses between the Russia-EU relations at the backdrop of the EU enlargement and then gives some forecasts for the coming trends. The dissertation is made up of two parts including five chapters. The preface attempts to highlight the research direction on basis of principally introducing the reasons of this question and the present situation of this research direction at home and abroad. The first part including chapter one and chapter two mainly writes about Russian viewpoint on Europe before the collapse of the Soviet Union with historical events as a thread. In chapter one, it aims to explain Russian viewpoint on Europe before the October revolution. By converting to the Orthodox religion, the Russian came to form the unique Orthodox-Slavic civilization different from the Catholic civilization and then began to build up the foundation of their own viewpoint on Europe. The key point of this chapter is that there were various views and reactions to the Europe in virtue of the western European countries' great influence on Russian increasing since the 18th century. In chapter two, it deals with Russian viewpoint on Europe in the whole Bolshevik ruling in which the debate on Europe basically was confined to a view or tone of the Soviet Union government as the national space of political opinions gradually withdrew to be completely controlled. Not until did Mikhail Gorbachev carry out the social and democratic reform, the world- shaking change occurred in the Soviet Union. From multi-dimensional view, the second part including from chapter three to five mainly expounds the adjustments and progresses of the relations between Russia and the European Union in the context of Russian all-sided transition and the EU Enlargement. The third chapter emphasizes on the disputes and adaptations in foreign policies of Russia in great transition and the formation and development of the bilateral relationship caused by these adaptations of policies to the European Union. With the new century coming, the relations between Russia and the EU have made some achievements in such fields as politics, energies, security and so on, in particular highlighting the cooperation and dialogue in field of security. In the political dialogue, they mainly build up the mechanism of dialogue between the two parties; in the field of energy, though the two parties are eager to cooperate, there are the current existing non-confidence and the disagreement in Geostrategic interests between them only to lead to fail the cooperation potential here. Without doubting, the dialogue and cooperation in security field (including conventional and non-conventional security) is the core of the relations between Russia and the European Union, especially when the European Union completes itsenlargement, Russia will become its new-found neighbor in deed, so the security issue naturally is considered as the most important factor of their relations. The fourth chapter highlights the presences of the EU enlargement and Russia how to response to it. As far as the EU Enlargement goes, it derives from the'Big Europe' ideal as well as taking Geopolitics and Geoeconomics into account; but for Russia, it basically gives up seeking the accession into the EU, after experiencing the illusions and miseries of the early transition.The...
