Following the Opium Wars which began in 1840, China gradually turned into a semi-colonial & semi-feudal society. Afterwards, China was confronted with two historical tasks: one was to realize the independence of the nation and the freedom of the people; the other was to realize the prosperity of the country and the common well-off life of the people. To resolve the two historical tasks, the advanced Chinese rose a trend to learn from the West, and they tried to make China move to the capitalism road which was prosperous and strong, however, all these attempts leaded to failure. It was proved by the history that China could not move to the capitalism road, therefore to resolve the two historical tasks, the Chinese had to find a new theoretical weapon. Just when the advanced Chinese were frustrated and waved to find a new way to save the country, the October Revolution in Russia delivered Marxism to China. Under the effect of the October Revolution, the advanced Chinese began to establish their belief of Marxism, which provided a new theoretical weapon to solve the two historical tasks.Marxism provided a scientific world outlook and methodology to solve the historical tasks in China, but owing to the particularity of Chinese national conditions and the practicality of Marxism theory, Marxism needed to combine with the practice of China when it came to China. By summarizing the experiences and lessons of the Chinese revolution , Mao-Zedong brought forth the proposition and the thought of the application of Marxism in China, and he gave a comparatively systematic exposition to the connotation of the application of Marxism in China. To carry forward the application of Marxism in China, Mao-Zedong mainly did four things: the first thing was to advance the CPC members to master more Marxism theory; the second thing was to solve the historical tasks in China under the direction of Marxism; the third thing was to summarize the experiences of the Chinese revolution and construction under the direction of Marxism; the forth thing was to combine Marxism with the outstanding cultural tradition of China. All these things became the basic way for Mao-Zedong to carry forward the application of Marxism in China.The historical conditions of Chinese society in that time was very important for Mao-Zedong to become a successful representative of the application of Marxism in China, but his individual qualifications also played an important role.
