This research mainly answers three questions in this dissertation: First, whoever are intellectuals? What relations are there between the intellectuals and the faculty? Second, what are the reasons and principles which lead to the decline of the critical spirit of "intellectuals" for faculty? Third, how can the spirit of "intellectuals" return for faculty?Focusing on these three questions, this research is located on the integration of basic theoretics and applied ones with academic exploration as the pivot. The ways and methods include multi-discipline and trans-discipline research, literature analysis, indirect-"demonstration" analysis, necessary development analysis, ets.The conclusion is as follows: The watershed of logical origin in intellectual narrative lies in the "knowledge" and the "intellect" between China and the west. The conception of "intellectuals" has ternary significations: broad sense, middle sense and narrow sense. For the narrow sense, it means "those who have social consciousness of public care, and make use of intellect for social critique". Based on the classical and ideal concept, faculty have drifted away from their "intellectuals" roles and spirit farther and farther, though some of them should be responsible.The reasons of the decline of the spirit of "intellectuals" for faculty lies in the following: In the realm of politics, they include the transfer of ideological discourse, the change of the class-basis for traditional revolution, the status of "the dominated in the dominating class" for knowledge stratum, the socialist model of Stalin, the complicated relations between the man of knowledge and politics, the faculty's stratification and its administrative policy.In the realm of economy (market), they are the "invisible hands" the commodity logic of marketplace, the professionization of academic production and the "social cement" barrier of the collective unconsciousness by "culture industry". In the cultural rootstock, they consist of the split of "two culture", subject territory and discipline, the postmodernist exclusion of the grand and liberative narratives and the confliction and division of inter-sub-cultures in campus "cultural community".The returning of this spirit calls for the cooperation of "negative liberty" and "positive liberty". In the market system, the American Tenure is the best institutional guarantee to safeguard the negative academic freedom. We expect the returning of the spirit of "intellectuals" for Chinese faculty.
