History, Culture And Reality: National Identity Of Hui Ethnic Group

Compared with other Chinese ethnic groups, the social group incidents have higher occurrence probability, therefore, to a certain extent Hui ethnic group and Chinese Islam left the public an unreal impression even be misunderstood. In this context, research on the Hui and Islam, it is particularly necessary and important. The paper takes two famous Hui communities N and S as field cases from the perspective of interaction between community and the state,to discuss national identity of Hui ethnic group, to interpret the Hui community how is right with China's society on history, current situation and future by reproduction of Islamic culture. By responding to the realities of social problems of China's religion, advances theories and methods on national identity of Hui ethnic group and social function of Islam in China which compatible with government's policies. Participated investigation and deep interview are used as main methods, and combining with sociology, political science and other cross-disciplinary approaches.The paper provides a central statement that Islam holds an effect of bi-direction to national identity of Hui ethnic group, and spells out that positive interaction between Hui community and state is the main trend through history, culture and reality. It represents that the policy towards ethnic groups and religions is a decisive factor for affecting the relationship between Hui community and state, and the bi-directional effect of Islamic religion.Based on the expression of Islamic culture in daily life, community context and globalization, theoretical construction and cultural interpretation for rural culture of Islam are made. Through analysis on the relationship among social stratification, field and national identity to explain the modernity of national identity of Hui, which is blended with the identities for religion, ethnic group and state as the unit of individuals and ethnic groups. Finally proposes that the reproduction of Islamic culture is an important way and means of adjustment for national identity of Hui. And by focusing on the rural modernity construction, it is concluded that harmonious development with religion and society is a solid foundation in reality to strengthen the national identity of Hui.In this paper, culture of Hui's national identity is theoretically constructed and interpreted, and Islamic bi-directional effect on Hui's national identity are presented, as well as models of interaction between Hui community and state. And also discusses cultural circle of Hui's civil education, mode of reproduction of Islamic culture and modernity of Hui's national identity, and these views are all innovative points of this paper.
