Urban historic district is an essential constituent of urban heritage culture and a unique urban spatial formation, which is considered tourism specetacle. In recent years the preservation and development of urban heritage has been paid more and more attention by the government and the society at large. The renovation and reconstruction of the urban historic district is an important part of the preservation of urban historic heritage, which increasingly becomes a challenge to urban development. This paper studies the Kuanzhai lane in Chengdu from the perspective of consumerism and applies the urban space production theory to the analysis of the transformations of urban historic district, providing theoretical framework and support for the renovation of urban historic district. The author begin this projecting by examining the "spatial reconstruction" of the Kuanzhai lane. It reveals the transformative paradigm of this spatial formation and its function, leading to my argument that after the commercialized reconstructions and functional redefinition urban historic district have become modern tourist attractions and urban consumerist spaces. The author then analyze the mechanism of urban production from the angles of "spatial consumption" and "spatial functioning," revealing how the heritage tourist specetacle, as historical signifiers, have been reconstructed and consumed, and how heritage tourist specetacle as historical and cultural resources transform into urban cultural capitals as well as the extent to which power and capital function together in this transformative process. "Spatial identification" is concerned with the communal and collection response to this space, which responds to "whose heritage and whose city is this?""Spatial recollections" indicate that urban historic renovation is not only a process of "spatial production," but also the reconciliation of the various parties involved in the process. The author also analyze the "thematization" of heritage tourism specetacle and "spatial reproduction," exploring the their significance and directions in the age of globalization. The author also point out that historic district renovation should be based on the principles of authenticity, constructing the Spirit of place. In this process, the integrated conservation is essential as well as the participation of citizens, the perfection of laws and restriction of powers. The paper indicates that how to renovate and preserve urban historic district and how to put it into practice is an issue of value judgment. "To know" is not separated from "to do," but "to know" better will allow us to do better. That is to say, to under the issue of the space production of urban historic district is the premise of adopting new directions and specific strategies. Therefore, this dissertation considers the frequent questions in the renovation of urban historic district by providing theoretical frameworks and discussions of values. It focuses on "to know," in the hope to do better in the future by providing theoretical support and evaluative criteria.
