Land use and land cover change (LUCC) is one of the most important projects on global environmental changes, additionally, the understanding of environmental effect of LUCC will play significant role in the next 10 to 20 years. It is urgent to select typical case study at various scales on the study of LUCC process, pattern, mechanism and effect. As the frontier of Reform and Open Policy, and the most developed area in China, Shanghai's land use and land cover has taken great place in the recent 20 years. Based on RS&GIS, this dissertation carries out the systemic and integrative case study on LUCC and environmental effect at various scales, aiming to improve the understanding of LUCC dynamics, to investigate factors that influence LUCC and the environment effect led by LUCC. The main findings are as follows:Based on spectral characteristics, the proposed classification models have many advantages over the conventional supervised classification methods. It is also more objective and faster and can acquire a higher accuracy, while multi-step-classification method can make good use of multi-spectral data, thus the extraction accuracy is greatly improved. From macroscopic process of LUCC in large-scale area, Shanghai was characterized by obvious urbanization and distinct regional difference from 1985 to 2000. The urban construction land was increasingly expanding by massively occupying arable land and there was a remarkable structural change of non-urban construction land; Some districts such as Pudong, Baoshan, Jiading and Minhang, which center around urban area, display a rapid growth of land use degree, more than 8.0. The land use degree also increases in other areas such as Fengxian, Nanhui and Jinshan with a smaller scope. The change rate of land use degree has a close relationship with newly increase rate of construction land, with a completely consistent of change tendency.Researches based on the statistical data showed that, in the recent 50 years, there was an obvious regional difference of arable land decrease. From 1954-2003, Minhang, Pudong and Baoshan have a serious arable land decrease but a dramatic increase of construction land owing to the rapid economic growth; The arable land decrease was relatively less serious in Chongming, Jinshan and Nanhui for the economic development was relatively slow and were far away from the Shanghai centered urban area. In the research area, the overall change of arable land quantity...
