With the establishment of the market economy system and the development of market economy, the progress of urbanization in China has entered a substantive stage of rapid development, the process of urbanization in metropolises especially developed faster and faster. However, we must face up to the facts that the rapid development of some metropolises have left the rational expansion track slowly in promoting China's rapid process of urbanization, the one-sided decision of urbanization leaded to over-urbanization, those metropolises which are "urban sprawl" in their expansion have given birth to serious urban diseases. Therefore, in order to improve their layout and spatial structure, such metropolises should choose the channel of rational expansion, which means it must be change from mono-center to multi-center urban space. No matter what form of structure is, there exists need to expand the urban development space rationally in some specific regions. The full dissertation is divided into 11 chapters: chapter 1 is introduction, it points out that China's urbanization development pattern is diversified, for metropolises, the essence of urban spatial structure transformation is to make the . realization of the organic space in order to avoid serious urban diseases in high-speed progress of urbanization in China. New cities must be set up as anti-generated magnetic system, attracting more and more people in metropolises transfer to new cities, thus to realize structural transformation of urban spatial structure. Chapter 2 is a theoretical review of the theories about new cities' growth, which including growth momentum theory, space growth theory, planning and development theory, the theory of industrial development, urban management reform theory and so on, all these five aspects of the growth management theory give a full screen and review of the research background to the growth pattern of new cities' in China. Chapter 3 is a practical review of new cities' growth in some typical countries and regions. Firstly, it sums up the cases of new cities' growth at home and abroad, especially focuses on the cases of typical foreign countries and regions; then, it makes a conclusion of the commonalities of new cities' growth in these foreign countries and regions; finally, it sorts out international experience about new cities' growth as inspiration to the study on growth pattern of new cities' in China. Chapter 4 is the study on the growth momentum of new cities in China, it points out that a process for rational expansion of metropolises should be established as leading to the balance of the progress of urbanization in China. In order to find out new space for growth, metropolises should choose the growth pattern of new cities, so as to obtain new opportunities in the realization of the agglomeration effect. Chapter 5 is the study on the space growth of new cities in China, as the result of the regional competition mechanism, space expansion mechanism, elements combination mechanism, urban self-organizing mechanism, industry-driven mechanism and planning guarantee mechanism, new cities in China find their chances of the early growth as new spatial organizations, therefore, new cities' growth should seek to their own expanding within the evolution of metropolises. Chapter 6 is the study on the planning and development of new cities in China, in the process of urban construction and the growth of new cities, it's believed that planning is a sticking point to realize the reasonable allocation of resources and the sustainable growth of new cities. "The New Urbanism" theory and "Smart Growth" theory can be used to give guidance to the new cities' planning. Chapter 7 is the study on the industrial development of new cities in China, industrial clusters in metropolitan fringe can promote industry development in new cities, but two problems must be thought about carefully: one is the regional industrial isomorphism problem, and another is the contestable mechanism between metropolises and their new cities. Chapter 8 is the study on the management reform of new cities in China, urban spatial structure and urban management system triggered breakthrough in the progress of urbanization, on the one hand, it directly triggered the emergence of a large number of new cities, on the other hand, it pushed forward new cities to the foreland of management reform. Chapter 9 takes the growth pattern of Xiasha new city in Hangzhou as an example to show out the performance of its growth momentum, space growth, planning and development, industrial development and urban management reform. At last, it deduces a conclusion that it's an ideal method to transfer a development area to a new city. Chapter 10 is an induced conclusion of the whole dissertation. It finds out that the growth pattern of new cities can contribute to the effect of rural areas driven by urban areas. However, it also points out the limits of such effect. What's more, the future of such effect is bright. Chapter 11 is the conclusion of the full dissertation, it analyses the innovations and shortcomings of the dissertation, and then puts forwards the needs for further research.
