Construction industry is one of the pillar industries of national economy in China.From the empirical studies of construction industry growth in other countries,it could be concluded that the share of value-added of construction industry in Gross Domestic Product(GDP) would be increased rapidly within the growth phase of industrialization. But from 1996 the share in China has been kept about 5.5 percent,which was lower than the average of other countries and even worse of decreasing.Besides,even after more than twenty years of reforming and development,the construction industry in China is still in the lower return and efficiency line.The ratio of profit to gross output value of construction is about half of that in the industrial sector from 2002 to 2006.The overall labor productivity in terms of gross output value of construction is about one-third of that in the industrial sector,and that in terms of value-added of construction is merely one-fourth of that in the industrial sector.That construction industry is lowered in profits and productivity has indicated that there are problems in its production factors and configuration.How to adjust the configuration of production factors for construction industry in China becomes an important issue of research under new circumstances of globalization,informatization and diversified market demands.This dissertation systematic sorts relevant theories about economic growth and industry evolution,and domestic and abroad research achievements relating to construction economy and industrial organizations,trying to build connections between "macro" economic growth and "micro" organizational evolution.Based on the economic growth model of efficiency race,the bottleneck of Chinese construction economic growth is empirically analyzed,which argues the development path from institutions changing to production factors input and to configurations of production factors.Furthermore,the core and path of industry evolution is put forward,which is the base of three spatial dimensions model of Chinese construction industry evolution.Based on modularity reconstruction of industrial value chain for Chinese construction,the three-dimension model consists of engineering services,products and geographic areas,and in the view of modularity and by re-integrating inner-industrial divisions changes the traditional construction industrial value chain that has been stretched too long.The modularity reconstruction model provides the construction companies new methods for searching the best configurations of resources in the three spatial dimensions by choosing different business portfolio to break through the limits of sectors and geographic areas.The modularity reconstruction of construction industry value chain turns the one-way chain contract into that of company networks.The dynamic selecting process among companies and diversified production configurations would not only multiply the products innovation speed,but also promote the changing of value competition rules from lower level means mainly based on price war to value competition mainly based on innovation capabilities.Based on modularity theory,the dissertation puts forward the evolution mode of Chinese construction industry consisting of selective units,selective criterion,variation sources and selective mechanism,which means that the construction industrial system would be decomposed into modules and sub-modules through the modularity reconstruction of the value chain.Thus,the real option would be increased to bring up the value of whole industry,while the modularity organizations would search within multiple-dimension value space the value-added of products and corporations,in the ways of competitive selective mechanism,to promote the economic growth and re-structure of Chinese construction industry.The modularity of construction products values is derived from the diversified, individualized and dynamic demands of building,which is the base of modularity reconstruction of building companies structure.Based on the development trends of building demands and the production way of construction products,this dissertation provides new theoretical analysis for the configurations of production factors and the special way of industrial clustering of construction industry.These analyses provide new reasons for ensuring higher efficiency and benefits and orderly market from the construction industrial productivity having flexibility of adaption to changing environments.The achievements of the dissertation would have important theoretical and practical values for understanding the process and mechanism of economic growth and evolution for Chinese construction industry and for industrial planning,evaluation and decision making of industrial policies.
