With various different countries and societies opening to the world fashion stage, theglobal civilization has been reevaluated by different national cultures. The Western scholarspropose the idea of globalization of ethnic design after they have put forward the designnotion of globalization and integration into one. The China Chic clothing culture and theclothing cultures of various countries in the world meet each other. In a postmodernist state, attotally different aesthetic and sentimental dimensions of the Chinese and Western cultures.TheChina Chic clothing plays an important role in the globalization of the ethnic design. Thisdissertation expands itself based on such a social and cultural background. The creation of the “Chinoiserie” originated from the desires and fantasies of the West. The impression and imagery of China and its art in the Western fantasies are destined in itsnarrow imagination to cause the loss of the completeness and truthfulness of the Chinesetraditional culture. The existence of Chinese style itself represented the variation andinterpretation of the Chinese culture, which coincides with the principle of the postmodernistdesign. The contemporary clothing design with Chinese characteristics have surpassed theChinese style in the history. Based upon sociology, study of fashion, semeiology, statistics, artistic ecology, study of artistic types, and postmodernist theory, this dissertation, by usingthe methods of documentation research, qualitative and quantitative mathematical analysis, comparative study, and case analysis, attempts to clarify the meanings and extensions of theChina Chic clothing both for Chinese and for Westerners in the postmodernist context, andthen provides the theoretical methods and reference for the understanding of the futuredevelopment direction of the China Chic clothing and the reconstruction of the imagery ofChina. Through the analysis of the results of relevant domestic and overseas studies, it isfound that these studies have focused mainly on the visual and sensual presentation, and have not designed and applied quantitative methods to conduct the studies. Therefore, they areunscientific and have not got rid of the limitations of sensual perception. The studies ofexample analysis show that the deficiency exists in the complete analysis and that in particular, which has impacts on the concrete design practice. This dissertation seeks to find theintersection point between the history and contemporary times through the respect for thetraditional cultural context and the deep mining of the historic context, aiming at maintainingthe continuity of the traditional culture imagery in the China Chic clothing design. Thediscussion of this dissertation expands at two dimensions of time and space. Through the deepanalysis of the China Chic clothing of both China and that of the West in different times andlocations which have been totally different in style, in particular the analysis andinterpretation of the good and bad individual cases, the dissertation points out theiradvantages and disadvantages. By conducting a mathematical analysis of100sampleexamples, it integrates the cultural factors of different natures and acquires the integrated anddiversified design methods for China Chic clothing. This dissertation considers that the China Chic clothing design should reconstruct the“Chinese imagery” on the basis of focusing on the Chinese spirit. We should use thepostmodernist notions of fashion of the consumer society to remove the prevailing defectsexisting in the generation and growth of Chinese style from the constructive and optimisticperspective. With the help of ecological design, the notion of optimum development, the carefor nature and other people, and the expectation of the return of the traditional culture, weshall make good use of the meaning and cultural implications of the Chinese traditionalculture as well as the aesthetics of deep levels to build up the brand new cultural modes anddesign modes of the China Chic clothing.
