In the21st century, in China’s rapid urbanization, formation and development of urban agglomerations maturing and emerging as the main form of urbanization have become important support for regional economic development. Spatial structure of urban agglomeration optimization is spatial structure in the urban agglomeration characteristics and trends on the basis of understanding, to meet the social and economic development of the times and the requirements of sustainable development, consciously and purposefully to the evolution of urban agglomerations’ spatial structure for group intervention and guidance, to promote re-combination of spatial structure and elements of optimization, in order to achieve optimal overall efficiency of the desired objectives. The development of urban agglomerations must be accompanied by the development of urban agglomerations’ spatial structure, in turn, optimizes the agglomerations’ spatial structure also contributed to the development of urban agglomerations. Constructing strong urban agglomerations, the key is to optimize its spatial structure.Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration is a national focus which is guided and nurtured in one of the seven city-intensive areas by government, is the one of the important urban agglomerations in the central region, and is in an important position in the country to implement long-term regional development strategy. However, Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration proposed the concept of urban agglomeration has been in early stage, but its development has been slowly. This thesis studies on the spatial structure of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration, for enhancing the competitiveness of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration, the implementation strategy of the central in China and constructing the resource-saving and environment-friendly oriented society. This thesis studies the spatial structure of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration with a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods for system diagnostics, analizes its characteristics and influencing factors, and puts forward the optimization principles、values、the detailed integration model and suggestions basing on its current characteristics. This thesis is maily composed of six parts.Firstly, the thesis introduces the the background and significance of selection spatial structure of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration and its optimization; Based on the domestic and international research on spatial structure of urban agglomerations, it proposes a framework and research methods with the combination of literature and case research, qualitative and quantitative, and interpretation and empirication to guide the optimization of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration’spatial structure.Secondly, the thesis introduces the concepts of urban agglomerations、 spatial structure of urban agglomerations and its optimization and theories of basis、evolution and optimization of urban agglomerations’spatial structure. The theories of basis of urban agglomerations’spatial structure mainly include the theory of spatial structure、urban’spatial structure、 growth pole、point-axis、metropolitan and network development; The theories of evolution of urban agglomerations’spatial structure mainly include the theory of spatial structural evolution stage and adjustment; The theories of optimization of urban agglomerations’spatial structure mainly include the theory of global city region, regional governance, new regionalism, industrial clusters and co-ordination.Thirdly, based on the principal component analysis method, the thesis calculates the competitiveness evaluation of seven urban agglomerations in China. The result shows that the competiveness of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration is the weakest. In addition to the geographical location of and regional policy, the affect of spatial structure is also contributed to less competitive. As competitiveness of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration is subject to inherent of local conditions and the measures of investment and policy to promote its effect is not obvious, it is particularly important for Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration’optimization.Fourthly, the thesis describes the historical evolution process of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration’spatial structure, systematically investigates from the population、urbanization、economy、spatial distribution and the relations between the cities, and shows the main features of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration’spatial structure as follows:regional "point-axis" system has formed、concentration and spread are co-exist in the spatial development、concentration effect of Changsha which is the primate city in the region is not strong, the region’s overall development level is not high, the different development is between the different region、weak relationship is between cities. The research explains the causes from the aspects of industry、transportation establishment、the natural condition and strategy mechanisms, and brings forward that the main features is not benefit for regional development. If Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration develops freely according to the status quo, it is more difficult from the "point-axis" system stage convert to the network stage.Fifthly, the thesis describes the principles and values of the optimization of Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration’spatial structure, based on the analysis above, the thesis comes up with the construction including integration and optimization of spatial structure、industry、 infrastructure、ecological environment and coordination system to optimize Chang-zhu-tan urban agglomeration’spatial structure. Integration and optimization of spatial structure should construct the mode "one core、 five centers and multi-node, three axis and five laps"; Integration of industry should optimize the industrial structure, construct industrial association and format industrial clusters; Construction of infrastructure should construct transport links and information links network; Construction of ecological environment should optimize the spatial structure and strengthen eco-space control; Construction of coordinate system should construct a policy coordination mechanism and multi-level coordinating agency.Sixthly, the concluded part summarizes five basic conclusions and three creative contents in terms of theoretical research and case research, meanwhile it also points out three future research prospects in the thesis.
