As energy shortage and environmental pollution appear increasingly severin the present, promotion of alternative pollution-free energy and reduction ofpollution in industries are crucially important. In both fields, high voltagepower supply plays a significant role. For instance, the50kV to1000kVpower supplies are used in electric precipitation system and in desulfurizationand denitration systems; the100kV power supply is used in the neutral beaminjection system of TOKAMAK. With the improvement of electromagneticmaterials and the development of the technology related to thepower-electronic switching devices, high frequency high voltage powersupply is an emerging trend. In the high frequency operation condition, thesize of the magnetic devices can be reduced significantly, so is the cost.In this thesis, the Tesla transformer and the iron core snubber used in highvoltage conditions are the research objects. The equivalent circuit and theequivalent magnetic circuit are applied to analyze their characteristics. Theresearch covers the following issues.1. The basic issues of the electromagnetic devices are studied, includingthe calculation of the air core inductance with the analytical method, the straycapacitance calculation and the investigation of the characteristics of themagnetic materials.The calculation of the air core inductance and the coil stray capacitancewith the analytical method has been considered as a puzzling difficulty,especially for the tapered winding. In this thesis, an analytical method ofcalculating the inductance and the stray capacitance is deduced by dividingthe winding into a set of coils. The analytical method is verified by finiteelement calculation and actual measurement. It is a fundamental tool for designing the Tesla transformer.The thesis reviews several magnetic models for describing the material’scharacteristics and modifies the parallelogram model in particular for furtherapplication. This modified parallelogram model can be easily used in thedescription of hysteresis characteristics.2. The basic principle of the Tesla transformer’s resonant operation isstudied.The high voltage high frequency power supply using the Tesla transformeris one kind of low cost high voltage power supply. In this supply system, theTesla transformer operates in resonant condition, which produces the highvoltage. The basic principle of the system is analyzed using equivalent circuitand simulation. The impact of the electrical parameters of the Teslatransformer on the whole system is analyzed and verified by an experiment, inwhich the output voltage reaches80kV.3. The iron core snubber is studied, and a snubber that can be used in the100kV NBI power supply is designed.The iron core snubber is one kind of pulse transformers. It works in theshort circuit condition. Its discharge response is studied by the equivalentcircuit and investigated in a1:10prototype snubber test. Based on the deriveddata and the electrical and magnetic design principles proposed here, a1:1transformer type snubber is designed.This thesis strives to study the magnetic devices used in the high voltagefield and proposes certain research methods of them, which may bear someacademic and applicational value at the present stage.
