Traffic flow path design is the key issue of passenger transport hub design. The current scattered theories about traffic flow path design are fragments which obtained from different aspects by the researchers in the field of architectural design and traffic & transportation. As a result, overall cognitions about traffic flow path design are blurred, which eventually result in the emergence of some design problems in Chinese comprehensive passenger transport hub designs. If these problems are only dealt with on the ad hoc basic, it’s not the radical solution. Since traffic flow path is the main chain throughout hub design and operation, systematic research on the theory of traffic flow path design has practical and theoretical significance.This dissertation aims to probe into traffic flow path design theory based on engineering practice. Grounded theory and qualitative meta-analysis are used in combination as research methodology. Huge amounts of information were achieved from field investigations, expert interviews, document surveys to explore the nature and laws of traffic flow path design problems. Correlation mechanism is reconstructed between traffic flow path design and hub operation, equipment & facility configuration, architectural space design. Core traffic flow path design practice of high speed railway passenger transport hub is abstracted as a scheme design problem of one typical special form traffic network, and design thinking way from different layer and different stage is proposed. The main content is as follows.(1) Systematically carding existing traffic flow path design theory from multi-disciplinary fields and different research questions to find the research gap, which include fundamental knowledge, basic relationship, design and optimization method, evaluation, etc.(2) Study traffic flow path design practice mechanism of high speed railway passenger transport hub from variation of design requirement, practical design innovation, and classic design example to induce the practical process, characteristics, method of traffic flow path design.(3) Study traffic flow path design theory mechanism of high speed railway passenger transport hub from the clarification of basic concept, the repositioning role of traffic flow path design in hub design, the reestablishing correlation between traffic flow path design and hub operation, equipment & facility configuration, architectural space design.(4) Study traffic flow path design methodology of high speed railway passenger transport hub by abstracting core traffic flow path system as multi-objects composite traffic network and proposing the totally new design thinking way from different layer and different stage with knowledge from a variety of disciplines incorporated.(5) Study traffic flow path design evaluation problem of high speed railway passenger transport hub with the index established from different layer and improved entropy method. The design problem of Wuhan railway passenger transport hub emerged after operation were analyzed, improved and evaluated to verify the theory and methodology proposed in this dissertation.
