Historical and cultural heritage bears true witness to human civilization and development, it is of great importance for humanity to understand history, increase self-awareness and promote development. As time progresses, preservation of historical and cultural heritage has become more and more valued by international communities and nations. Archaeological sites constitutes a very important part of historical and cultural heritage, they are historically, culturally and scientifically valuable, and hence, preservation and revitalization of archaeological sites is a serious issue of our society today. In 1956, the Xian Banpo Museum was established and opened to the public. China has become the earlier country in the world to build an onsite archaeological museum for the purpose of preservation and exhibition of an archaeological site. Since then, China has successively completed many other archaeological museums, which has become an important and indispensable part of preserving cultural heritage. However, research nowadays on the architecture of site museum is mainly focusing on building practice, diversified, multi-disciplinary and systematic researches are relatively lacking. In fact, the construction of site museums as a means to preserve and revitalize archaeological sites is restricted and controlled by international laws on preservation of cultural heritage and the development of the museum that involves a wide range of disciplines, with complexities that requires more research and practice for advanced conclusions and improvements.Architects play an essential role in heritage preservation, and today there are questions on how to design site museums, as different archaeological preservation issues arises during the process of architectural design, for example, there are doubts and confuses on what to preserve, why, and how to preserve. The aim of this thesis is to take preservation of site as the basis, and to carry out analysis and summarization from an integrated view on the historical improvement of the rules on preservation of cultural heritage, sites, museums and museum architecture, comprehensive analysis of the external and internal causes of the impact on site museum, to explore the theory of the integrity concept to guide the architecture design of ruins museum.Site protection and utilization emphases “authenticity and integrity, the least intrusive and identification”.and “environment, space, technology, form” as the “four essential elements”that influence the architectural integrity design of archaeological museums, each element is related closely to the preservation of archaeological sites. The overall objective, which is to preserve archaeological site through establishment of archaeological museum can only be achieved by meeting the demands of preservation through the “four essentialelements”, and the realization of their synergy effects. This thesis is divided into four parts:The first part of this thesis covers chapter one, focusing on discussion of the research background, the basic concept in relation to the architecture of archaeological museums, the purpose and significance of the research, and the research methodology and framework. The second part of this thesis covers chapter two and chapter three, on the basis of straightening out related theories and practice of preservation and exhibition of historical and cultural heritage, and straightening out the improvement of museums, ruins preservation and the integrity of archaeological museum, to clarify what and why certain preservation is necessary for site museums, to construct an integrity architectural design theoretical framework that is based on the concept of preservation, and propose integrated design method of synergy. The third part of this thesis covers chapter four, chapter five, chapter six and chapter seven. Under the theory of “ authenticity and integrity, the least intrusive and identification” based on the concept of preservation, to conduct a research on architecture itself through the relations other archaeological museums and the “ four essential elements”, in order to propose “harmonious environment, appropriate space, suitable technology, adaptive form ” as solutions strategies to site museum design based on the concept of preservation. The fourth part is the last part of this thesis, covers an overall summary and conclusion. To establish the integrity design concept, explore the integrity theory and implement the integrity design strategies, which have theoretical and practical significances to improve the development of ruins museum. Finally, the thesis is proposing an outlook to the future development of site museum.
