Objective:The research plays an important role in helping understand what actions had TCM taken under the background of "The resolution on abolition of old medicine in modern China" when the survival crisis of TCM broke out through analyzing how modern classical prescription school formed and evaluting its devotion. When coming into dilemma, modern TCM can draw lessons from this historical experience.Method:The research synthetically uses four methods, such as theoretical approach, literature research method, comparative method of thought history, and social history theory of Multiple modernities.Theoretical approach is utilized to draw a conclusion from modern classical prescription school’s historical experience in the developing history of TCM, as well as exploring the internal rules of development of modern TCM.Using literature research method to collect and collate modern classical prescription school’s works and related data in order to appraise their academic ideas.Adopting comparative method of thought history to compare modern classical prescription school with Febrile Diseases School in Ming or Qing Dynasty and Japanese Ancient Formula School,in search of factors which leading to the formation of modern classical prescription school. Taking advantage of social history theory of Multiple modernities which attaches great importances to appraising what contributions had modern classical prescription school brought to the development of modern TCM reasonably.Results:Modern classical prescription school pursued clinical effects and advocated classical prescriptions with a large quantity of Chinese herbs. They have researched deeply on Shanghan Lun and laid stress on positivism. Moreover they highlighted the science of TCM, and absorbed experience of later ages. This group had many medical practitioners who have always been calling for using classical prescriptions with the real Zhongj ing’s spirit of prescriptions in mind. Some of them were good at using poison, some were specialized in using dried ginger and aconite, some did well in using gypsum and rhubarb. Some of them studied hard on six meridians, some maintained correspondence of prescriptions and syndromes and others may take up experience of classic formula school of Japanese Kampo. Even some medical practitioners combined Chinese with western while others may use acupuncture and classical prescriptions together. However all the ways were in consensus at the one point because all these medical practitioners were depend on Shanghan Lun and classical prescriptions which were applied in establishing academic standardizations of TCM and searching for the scientific methods of development of TCM.Conclusion:The influences of Modern Positivism Thoughts, times background of the controversy between chinese medicine and western science along with the promotion of Japanese Kampo all encouraged the formation of modern classic prescription school. However, the most important factor was methodology innovation of Shanghan Lun research since Qing Dynasty, reforming TCM and leading the tendency of positivism of Shanghan Lun research in modern times.Modern classic prescription school played a significant role in promoting modern TCM educations and dealing with modern infectious diseases, they preserved traditional disciplines and established examples of inheriting TCM academic. Meanwhile, their advocations of scientific spirit, pursuit of clinical curative effects and emphasizing of correspondence of prescriptions and syndromes have also pushed the inheritance and development of modern Chinese medicine.
