Objective:This study was to investigate the evolution of prescription effect expression through the collation of the ancient and recent literature, and to explore the factors that may affect the overall efficacy of relevant prescription from a theoretical perspective, finally to build the basic principle that could judge the effect of a prescription.Methods:This study was based on the method of bibliography, edition, history and kinds of literature to collect ancient literature.Using the original data and retained in the earlier discussion that is of the same contents.For the different ideas, we should keep all of the relative data which has been analyzed and combed. Then we may obtain the relative factors that affect the effect of a prescription and build finally relative principle.Results:(1)Prescription effect expression obviously was later than indications. Many ancient prescription only documented composition, indications and usage.(2) The summary of effect of special expression:①It is the first time to sate the effect as an independent special statement in Grand Dictionary of Chinese Medicine. ② The present terms of prescription was lack of unified norm, and some of them was of orientation and qualitative problem.(3)The relative influenced factors of a prescription effect:The prescription composition, dose, dosage form and usage are the basic factor that influence prescription effect, the composition and dose are key factor. (4) The principle of judging a prescription effect:The basic factor is compatibility of prescription, considering the amount of dosage, especially the dosage of monarch drug. Texture features, formulation and usage are secondary factors. The expression of a prescription effect should be combined with the indications and pathogenesis. (5) The principle of expression a prescription effect:The basic element was to react the pathogenesis, the main effect should put it on the front, the secondary effect on the back.Conclusions:This study was based on a large number of ancient medical or prescription literature, and summarized the basic principle that could judge and express the prescription effect correctly. This study also could provide the theoretical references for further study of prescription theory.
