The Study Of Formula Syndrome Of Wuling Powder

Object:In this paper we carry out a retrospective study on wuling powder.The decoction is from "Treatise on Cold-induced Febrile" and "Synopsis of Golden Chamber".There have already some studies on this subject recent years.Because the methods of these study has serious flaws,the meaning of these studies is limited.The lax selection standard is the main defect.What we do in the study is to overcome the flaws of previous studies and put forward features of the the formula syndrome of wuling powder.Methods:Our study has steps as follows:firstly,we build up a database of wuling powder.In this step,the diseases which can be treated by the decoction,symptoms and signs of patients and characteristics of patient’s constitution are the main content of the database,they are the main parameters of analysis.Secondly,statistic analysis such as frequency and others is performed.Lastly,we discuss the meaning of these results.Apart from the discussion of wuling powder,we discuss the decoctions which are similar to wuling powder and some other aspects about the clinical use of wuling powder also.Results:we sum up the classic formula syndrome as follows.1)thirst and dysuria;2)vomit after drinking water,diarrhea,or edema;3) being light in the head, heart-throb,sweating or headache;4)The pulse in febrile patients is often floating and fast and there has no immobile tongue characteristics of wuling powder.In patients who has no fever,the pulse is often deep and the tongue may be pale and corpulent or pale and dim.The less-classic formula syndrome of wuling powder including:1)the diseases in which pain is main manifestation,these diseases may be migraine,stubborn headache. chronic headache,High Intracranial Pressure,meningitis,glaucoma,encephalic tumor;2) the diseases in which swirl is main manifestation,these diseases include Meniere disease,heat stroke,falling sickness,CO intoxication,meningitis, pseudomyopia and so on;3) the diseases in which diarrhea is main manifestation such as rotavirus diarrhea in infants,acute enteritis,epidemic diarrhea and dyspepsia;4) the diseases in which vomit is main manifestation.When companied by thirst,lack of urine and vomit after drinking water,these diseases can be treated by the decoction;5) the diseases in which dysuria is main manifestation,when diseases such as acute Pyelonephritis and so on manifest thirst,lumbar pain,we can use the decoction;6) the diseases in which edema and Fluid Volume Excess are main manifestation.There have many chances in diseases like acute or chronic glomerulonephritis,nephrotic syndrome to use wuling powder.The decoction is the first choice in these diseases especially when thirst and lack of urine appear,other treatment are not effective or tolerable or the patient’s condition rapidly deteriorate;7) the diseases in which thirst is main manifestation.8)If other diseases’ manifestation include obvious thirst and dysuria,we can use wuling powder too.We study the features of "wuling powder constitution" as well and illustrate the feature of the constitution from aspects including physique,skin,complexion, abdomen signs,companying symptoms and signs of pulse and tongue.Lastly,we differentiate the formula syndrome of wuling powder from Lingguizhugan decocotion,Fulinggancao decoction,Zhenwu decoction,Jinguishenqi pill,Zhuling decoction,Wuzhuyu decoction,Xiaobanxiajiafuling decoction,Zhuling powder,Xiaoqinglong decoction,Yuebijiazhu decoction,Baihujiarenshen decoction and Fulinggancao decoction.The contraindications and adverse effect is also discussed.Conclution:Comparing the results of the study and describing of Zhangzhongjing, we find that although the spectrum of wuling powder’s usage is enlarged in history, the basic features of the formula syndrome of the decoction did not vary significantly. With thorough study of classic literature of traditional Chinese medicine,the mechanism of wuling powder’s effect will be clarified in the future.
