1895-1945, in transforming China, the intellectual stratum attempts by imagination and narration for China to seek a collective modern identity, so that it will be establish the effective way and lawful means about revolution. The student was set up as a symbol of Modernity, not only lies on the new quality, which meets to the imagination and shaping of the ideal national from elite to mass, but also implies the appeal of modern Chinese experience and value. The image of student reflects a reasonable explanation of traditional, life and the future; one intermediary concept of the New China vision; one Utopia bearing the ideology and aesthetic. The image of student becomes a circuitous route to achieve its politics and culture ideal, because of the anxiety of the country and the appeal of enlightenment.This dissertation is divided into five chapters, selects the student studying abroad, ideal student, female student, and the old student to discussion. This classification follows with a time sequence and a logical sequence of the community. The student studying abroad as an entity symbol of the difference between traditional and modern, this outlines the Chinese modern’s birth, changing, remodeling and scattered clues, and different periods with different imaginations. With the contemplation of this student, expresses the conflicts between Chinese culture and Western culture. The ideal student associates with the core proposition of the old and the new conflict. The ideal student is sacred to the pronoun of progress, implies an enlightenment appeal, as the symbol of revolutionary forces and modern consciousness. Nora Pattern rely from love to revolution, be aware of synonymous substitutions. The old student reflects and deconstructs the myth of ideal student. The fifth chapter of this dissertation interprets college space, which effect on the cultural formation, shaping student’image, and enhance the sense of identity and national value. The college has been incorporated into the overall design scheme of Modernity, it is provides a argumentation and interpretation space of New China’narration, and also reflects the spirit of intellectual.The conflict and balance of political, cultural, commercial power, around the image of student formed a concept conflict field, but degenerate repetition of prototype. Eventually the student image experienced the transformation from the enlightenment to the enlightened role, during these transitions compose a mirror of modern China.
