In order to matching the expressions of guiding ideology a set of narrative andrhetorical techniques had been developed during practicing of shooting revolutionaryhistory movies in thirties years, that is, from1949to1979. On the one hand, revolutionary history movies constructed the history of nation and regime and shapedpublic ideas about history. On the other hand, these movies provided the public arevolutionary ideology which gave ordinary people the basic moral and ethicalprinciples and helped them to realize their subjectivity. So revolutionary historymovies had already been a part of the mainstream of current Chinese culture. However, revolutionary history movies have taken a new look after1990s.In this thesis I want to describe the changes of revolutionary history movies onexpressions and narration from1990to2011. These changes located in the social andeconomic transformation of China, so I would also picture the ideology changes in thecontext of modern pluralistic Chinese society. My thesis would discuss revolutionary history movies in three aspects. In the first aspect, I would describe the changes of revolutionary history moviessince1990s under the influence of many elements, such as the transformation of statesystem, the impact of government, the composition of capital and the trend of thoughtin literature and art.In the second aspect, I would analysis the ideological expression manners ofrevolutionary history movies since1990s. On the one hand, the makers ofrevolutionary history movies accepted some expressions of traditional ideology notonly because they had to use some traditional movies techniques and take intraditional ideology content but because the revolutionary language is a continuoussymbolic system. On the other hand, revolutionary history movies had some newchanges since1990s because of the transformation of state system, the changes ofsocial context and the new ideas and expressions of modern movies. I want to arguethat the changes of revolutionary history movies showed that the guiding ideology affected revolutionary history movies realizing their values and the makers ofrevolutionary history movies was trying hard to explore a new expression under thepressure of movies’ commercialization. In the third aspect, I want to elaborate how the makers of revolutionary historymovies dealt with the contradiction between the expressions of ideology andcommercial profits in the quite new history context after1990s. Revolutionary historymovies didn’t have any attractions on audiences if they just focused on expressing theguiding ideology. So the movie makers took in some new elements, used all kinds ofresources, adopted effective rhetoric and expressing manners to attract moreaudiences. As a result, the guiding ideology of revolutionary history movies faded out.In order to balance the art, market and politics the movie makers inclined to reformrevolutionary history movies by emphasizing their universal values and complicateddrama conflicts.
