The Mogao Grottoes’ screen painting emerged in the Glorious age of Tang Dynasty, after its middle age, it had formed the regular pattern and been extensively applied. In Tang Dynasty, screen painting is a representative and widely used form of fresco. Its application reconstructed the pattern of painting and disposition of cave fresco not only in content but also in shape and structure.This article investigates on The Mogao Grottoes’s screen painting associated with other cave fresco, fresco in coffin chamber from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Five Dynasties, remains of screen and Scroll painting, and combines with historical documents, tries to review the function and meaning of the screen painting in The Mogao Grottoes even more macroscopically.There are five chapters:Chapter1:Development of its form and patternThis chapter divides The Mogao Grottoes’s screen painting in Tang Dynasty into2kinds, one is in the niche, the other is in main room, and tries to find out the regular pattern of its emergence, development and evolution.Chapter2:Context, tradition and cultureThis chapter describes the tradition of its usage, the form of painting in central area of China, and the transmission from the central to the northwest.Chapter3:Architecture, space and functionThis chapter discourses upon the architecture patterns closely related to screen painting in Dunhuang, which are wall niche shape like bed-curtain and grottoes with covered dipper top, and their origins and functions, in order to investigate the reason of its emergence.Chapter4:Theme, draft and flowing deformation of screen painting in the nicheThis chapter focuses on screen painting in the niche, discusses the screen painting of retinue, figure under the tree and story of Buddhist scriptures, and analyzes its draft and flowing deformation.Chapter5:Theme, draft and flowing deformation of screen painting in the main roomThis chapter focuses on screen paintings on the4sides of the main room in different themes, and the development in structure and content.In a word, this article totally probes into the related questions of The Mogao Grottoes’s screen painting referring to the time and the space.
