The screen-style murals are a unique painting style in Han and Tang Dynasties, screen-style murals in Han and Tang Dynasties could be roughly divided into two groups:auxiliary screen-style murals and independent screen-style murals. The development history of screen-style murals in Han and Tang Dynasties could be divided into three stages:the period from Han Dynasty to Wei and Jin Dynasties, the period from Northern Dynasty to Sui Dynasty and the period of lang Dynasty.Along its development history, both the unearthed position and space concept of screen-style murals were changing. During the period from Han Dynasty to Wei and Jin Dynasties, screen-style murals were mainly drawn on the side wall or in the side chamber of the tomb. On the two-dimensional wall surface, a three-dimensional space formed by the tomb owner, folding screen, bed and drapery was reflected. During the period from North Dynasty to Sui Dynasty, screen-style murals were transferred to the front wall, which were placed side by side behind the tomb owner. The space between the screen-style murals and the tomb owner was obviously compressed. In Tang Dynasty, screen-style murals were drawn in the tomb around the wall surface against which the coffin platform rested. The picture of the tomb owner had been separated from the painting, and a true three-dimensional space was formed between the screen-style murals and the coffin platform. The connotation of screen-style murals was also different at different periods, which was particularly reflected by the figures under trees in the screen-style murals. In Northern Dynasty, in Shandong Area, the figures under trees in screen-style murals seemed to originate from "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove", and showed a collective representation of eminent monks and Taoists. Early in Tang Dynasty, this pattern was applied in Taiyuan and Chang'an Areas but changed. In Taiyuan Area, the figures under trees in screen-style murals were replaced by dutiful sons, loyal ministers and other figures representing Confucian moral concepts. While in Chang'an Area, the figures were replaced by Distinguished Chinese Girls, based on the Stories of Distinguished Chinese. From the later time of early Tang Dynasty, as hedonism prevailed, these Distinguished Chinese Girls were replaced by noble women.Collating and researching on screen-style murals in Han and Tang Dynasties will provide relatively accurate and effective basis for us to restore paintings in Han and Tang Dynasties to its original state and build more complete and believable history of art in Han and Tang Dynasties. Meanwhile, it is also of great significance for us to study painting concepts, styles and techniques as well as funeral culture in Han and Tang Dynasties.
