The Writing Of Representatives Of May Four Movement: On Morality And Aesthetics

The question of the relationship between the morality and the aesthetics is an old and fresh subject. From ancient to today, many thinkers have felt interesting and unremittingly studied this question. Their achievement not only left rich material to the successors, but also proved that the study of the relationship between the morality and the aesthetics was the need for mankind’s lives and the progress of civilization. Today, the study of the relationship between the morality and the aesthetics is worth doing too. There will be some value of learning and value of reality in this work.The study of the relationship between the morality and the aesthetics in this article was divided into four parts.Firstly, the study of the relationship between the morality and the aesthetics was according to the original definitions. The research if this question is completed through Chapter 1 – “The relationship and connotation between morality and aesthetics”. In the first part of Chapter 1 “Understanding about the morality”, the definition of the morality was given. The “dao” means the rules of people with people or people with society; the “de” means that people practiced according to the rules and built up the inner world. The features of the morality were showed in three aspects. The first is the law field to maintain the behavior of the group. The second is the value judgment of good and evil; the last is the demonstration and persuasion of the system, rather than the "mandatory" form. The paper points out that the cultural representatives proposed moral view mainly includes the following elements: equality, universal brotherhood and intellect. In the second part “The connotation of aesthetic”, the appreciation of the beauty means people enjoyed the sight of objects. The beauty means “the objects were felt satisfactory and complete”. In the course of the appreciation of the beauty, people and objects affected each other, people and objects must possess some features. As a link between the subject and object, aesthetic activity is mainly a kind of emotional activities. In the third part of "moral and aesthetic relations", the thesis mainly analyzes the unity between moral and aesthetics. To people, they should have some mental structure and have no utility desire; to objects, they should be valuable to people and be fresh, concrete, changing and “containing lots of displays”. There were similar and different sides between the morality and the aesthetics. The different sides were showed in the value and intellect being much used in the morality, but feeling being much used in the aesthetics. The similar sides were showed in that they all worked for people’s highest ideal and they helped each other.Secondly, in the second chapter "the morality of the May 4th Literature Revolution" and the third chapter "the aesthetic view of the May 4th Literature Revolution " view the literature during this period of moral values and aesthetics. In the second chapter, the transition of the new literature of the May 4th literary revolution morality mainly for publicity evolution, from the patriarchal moral emotion to human rational moral, advocating equality, called for the women’s liberation, and care of nature, to the "personal standard" moral negative order, emotional freedom of love. In the fourth chapter, the traditional aesthetics was changed to modern aesthetics in three aspects too. The first was that canceling the moral standard by which the beauty was judged and setting the reality as the standard; The second was that changing the way of writing in which the emotion was dominated to the intellect; The third was that from regarding the harmony as beauty to regarding the complexity as beauty.Thirdly, in order to summarize their viewpoints on the morality, the aesthetics, the relationship between the morality and the aesthetics, the writer of this article selected four most representative writers in the Revolution Of the Literature during the period of the May the Fourth Moment, Chen Duxiu, Hu Shi, Zhou Zuoren, Lu Xun, arranged their speeches and articles. The problem was discussed in the last chapter “the moral and aesthetic thoughts of new literature writers”.Finally, the thesis interprets moral and aesthetic value and realistic significance on behalf of the new literature authors in the conclusion part.
