From The "Techniques Of All Sorts Of Crafts" To The Modern Design

《Art&Design》is the first and the only comprehensive academic journal of design inChina, which was founded in February1958, ended in1961. From its reopening in1980untilnow, the process of 《Art&Design》developed synchronous with that of Chinese design. It isthe direct reflection of the transformation process for Chinese design from traditional cultureto modern and post-modern.The First Chapter of this dissertation starts from the description of the layout ofhandicraft industrial economy, the transfer of economic center, the history of officialhandicraft industries and private handicraft industry, guild system and all sorts of crafts,making a comprehensive statement on Chinese traditional craft culture. At the beginning ofP.R.C founded, in order to coordinate the economic development and the reforming ofhandicraft industry, thereby promoting the foundation of the 《Art&Design》from CentralAcademy of Fine Arts.The Second Chapter summarized the 《Art&Design》, mainly elaborating the inauguralissue of content and process of publication and development of its reprinting. The ChapterThree, Four and Five is the main part, describing the historical transformation anddevelopment from the handicraft industry to modern design in the 《Art&Design》.According to the three main clues that western country researching on design history,transformation is composed of thinking transformation, form transformation and materialtransformation. Of course the transformation occurring in China is with the unique Chinesecharacter. The Third Chapter is the ascension to the articles published in the 《Art&Design》from1958to1961, the magazine in this period has already been presented with the moderndesign idea of anti-decoration and advocating rational spirit. In the ideological era, thesetraces could only be submerged in the political atmosphere without design revolution powerbeing burst. Chapter Four and Five interpreted the process of modern design conceptstarting from scratch in the20years of the《Art&Design》from1980to2001.The FourthChapter is divided into two parts, from this stage of the 《Art&Design》, we could see underthe atmosphere of the transition from planned economy to market economy, by theexploration of materials, form and function, design has been gradually getting rid of thepolitical constraints and facing to the market oriented and mass consumption, which formingthe rapid development stage of Chinese modern design.According to the articles that published in 《Art&Design》from1990s to2000s, theFifth Chapter showed the flourish10years of Chinese design. By learning fromthe western design, it reflected the maturity attitude on recognizing and introduction on thediscussion the relationship between science and art, the way of commercial design,education standardization on design and the new arts and Crafts categories. Under thePost-industrial civilization background, the introduction of ecological design and computertechnology made Chinese design merged with the world rapidly. The Sixth Chapter mainly describes the relationship between 《Art&Design》andChinese design history under the context of consumer culture. It confirmed the value andcontribution that 《Art&Design》 made comparing to the foreign design in the same period,showing that Chinese design should rely on its own culture.In the conclusion, the argument of the dissertation is putting forward by the long periodresearch on《Art&Design》, that the transformation of Chinese design from traditional tomodern developed in three factors, which is anti-decoration ideas, simple formand modern industrial materials. Taking the reform and opening up as the dividing line, it isthe ideology of material reflects before it, while it is the reflection ofindustrialization, consumer culture in design after it. At the same time, anti-tradition didnot eliminate the tradition, art and craft are still in development in the process of transition,which keeping pace with the times and innovation development. It thus formed thedevelopment pattern that coordination and mutual supplement of handcraft and machine.
