Sociolinguistic Study On The Status Quo Of Korean Language Usage In Yanbian Area In China

This essay describes the phenomenon of the Korean of the northeast dialect in Yanbian district, according to the survey of the Koreans in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin province in China, and studies the status, the change and the causes of language.There are more and more variations in the northeast dialect in Yanbian district, affected by South Korea in 20 years, since the diplomatic relations between Korea and China in 1992. Therefore, we try to study the uses of the northeast dialect in Yanbian district from the sociolinguistic and diachronic viewpoint, and investigate the preservation and the variation of the northeast dialect by the questionnaires and interviews.Chapter 1 concerns about the methodology and the findings of the northeast dialect, with the sociolinguistic method.Chapter 2 concerns itself with the formation of the Korean society and the language environment of the Korean in Yanbian, China. The majority of Korean people are from Hamgyong of Korea. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, nowadays there are 1.839 million Korean within Chinese territory, constituting 0.19% of the Chinese population. There are 800 thousand Korean, which are 42% of all the Korean people in China, living in Yanbian.This Chapter is about the process of the standardization and the current situation of the Korean in this language environment. This chapter reveals the history of the influx of the people who use the northeast dialect and we can understand much better the language environment of the northeast dialect.Chapter 3 concerns about the variations of the Korean in Yanbian. With the statistics of phonetics, vocabulary and grammar, we try to explain the variations of the northeast dialect. We investigate and analyze the uses of the northeast dialect with 14 survey items of phonetics, 46 items of vocabulary and 36 items of grammar.Chapter 4 concerns itself with the trends of the Korean in Yanbian on three aspects-phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. In 14 survey items of phonetics,46 items of vocabulary and 36 items of grammar of this essay, we try to predict the development of the Korean with the great variations of 9 items of phonetics,23 items of vocabulary,23 items of grammar.Chapter 5 is the conclusion of this essay and concerns about the inadequacy and the study in the future. The variations of language in Yanbian are unrelated to sex, age, birthplace and career. According to the study, there are not only the variations of language in Internet, TV and communications between China and South Korea, but also in the genre of people who use language more frequently. Although we try to overcome the incompleteness of the regions and the respondents of the survey, there are still inadequacies which are one of the regrets in this essay.The essay will play an important part on the study about the variations of the Korean in Yanbian, China. We hope this essay could help to understand the process of the Korean in China and to research and study more deeply by overcoming the limitations of this essay.
