There have been obvious changes in modern calligraphy culture from the calligraphy communication visual angle, such as the practicability of calligraphy weakens and the artistry strengthens. The media and way of calligraphy communication has changed the style of its communication, which enriches and distinguishes the content and effect of calligraphy. The popularization and development of calligraphy has changed the pattern of calligraphy existence and communication. During the period of strengthening culture construction, how to inherit and propagate calligraphy culture becomes a necessary subject. Shen Yinmo, as a representative calligrapher of Tiexue, masters the practice and theories of calligraphy well, who is very important. The goal of researching the Shen Yinmo’s inheritance of calligraphy is to draw on the experience of him to show the contribution and meaning of calligraphy in the development of society.The main content of this dissertation as follows:Firstly, the content of Shen Yinmo’s inheriting calligraphy. He constructs a system of calligraphy theory based on writing through his own experience. Style, gesture and meanning of writing compose the main content of the calligraphy skills, which are Shen Yinmo’s basic calligraphy theories. The style of writing is the basis of calligraphy communication, the gesture of writing is the root of calligraphy creation and the meaning of calligraphy is the theoretical basis of calligrapher’s aesthetics and aesthetic education. The theories of style of wrting unify writing scientifically, moving wrist correctly and using brush rationally. The guesture of writing creates new features of calligraphy through writing stipples. The meaning of calligraphy shows the aesthetics of Tiexue which contains Life Aesthetics and the aesthetic education thoughts of calligraphy.Shen Yinmo inherits the variation of calligraphy. His concept of Bei and Tie changed twice. The first is when he heard some critical opinions, he began learning Bei and stopped Tie, and the second is when he saw Mifu’s calligraphy, he returned to Tie. After 1949, Shen Yinmo’s calligraphy communication changes from interpersonal to public communication, calligraphy creation changes from profession to popularization and his calligraphy exhibition changes from small-scale to large-scale. The audiences of his calligraphy inheritance also changes from teaching students to train the masses. In the aspect of the expression of calligraphy inheritance, he uses Vernacular, regular script and running hand mostly. Moreover, he mainly chooses newspaper to popularize calligraphy. He becomes a communicator of calligraphy from a calligrapher.It is difficult for Shen Yinmo to inherit calligraphy. Shen Yinmo firmly believes in some faith, which is because of the effects of the time spirit. The time spirit becomes one of his calligraphy quality elements, which makes him integrate into times and advocate the time style. Shen Yinmo is a warrior of the New Culture Movement, so the science concept goes deep into his mind which reflects in the physics, physiology, regular pattern and principle of his calligraphy and shows his demonstration way of his calligraphy research. His enlightenment thoughts originate from his teaching in CCCA of Beijing University, which becomes the thought origin of calligraphy popularization and education. Calligraphy popularization and education is the concrete application of calligraphy enlightenment thoughts of Shen Yinmo. It is the transition period between the calligraphy in the Republic China and the one in the People’s republic of China.The importance of Shen Yinmo is the chapter of summary of his inheritance of calligraphy. The self-construction, the construction of calligraphy development and the construction of calligraphy culture are three parts of this chapter. Skill, personality and time spirit are the three aspects of the self-construction and the three elements of becoming a successful calligrapher. Shen Yinmo advocates establishing the research association of Chinese seal cutting, constructing the theories of calligraphy in its development process and integrating calligraphy education, exhibition and creation into one, which establish a new pattern for the development of calligraphy association and career. Shen Yinmo affirms the cultural status of calligraphy, which not only makes calligraphy possess the same position with picture, music and so on, but also elevates calligraphy to be the High Art representing culture. Shen Yinmo pave a way between the self-construction of calligrapher and calligrapher career and the independence of calligraphy and the generating of calligraphy culture.This dissertation chooses Shen Yinmo’s inheriting calligraphy as research object which contains the meanings of carding the history of calligraphy development, guiding modern calligraphy research and calligraphy creation. The practice of Shen Yinmo’s Tiexue style is an important example of learning calligraphy. The calligraphy theories are the results of learning tradition and his own writing, which is helpful to learn the calligraphy style of Jin and Tang. Reviewing Shen Yinmo’s innovation of establishing calligraphy association can help us to understand the beginner’s mind deeply and know the historical responsibility and mission of modern calligraphers. Shen Yinmo thinks highly of the time spirit and cultural meaning of calligraphy, which makes him play a great role in international culture communication.
