Research On Zeng Guofan’s Thoughts Of Official Morality And Cultivation

Start with the basic concepts of "official", "virtue" and "cultivation", this dissertation is a systematic study of Zeng Guo fan’s official ethics thought from the aspect of combining the education in Ideology and Politics with the Moral Philosophy, based on the theory of Maxist Official Morals. This dissertation touches on the origin, core, value pursuit, the rule of official virtue and cultivation methods of Zeng Guo fan’s Official Ethics Thought to demonstrate the ideological system comprehensively in a multi-level. The characteristics of its features, function, historical limitation and contemporary significance are included that to start a discuss for the further research of Zeng Guofan’s Official Ethics Thought.The key point and difficulty of the research is to systematical summarize and refine the moral thought system of Zeng Guofan’s official virtue cultivation. The dissertation systematically extract the thought system from the scattered views which is referred to Zeng Guofan’s poems, letters, and diaries by using historical materialism and Dialectical Materialism, and trying to combine the theory of human nature, value, norms with methodology. By integrating and refining, it comes to Zeng Guofan’s ideological system of official virtue and cultivation based on the "nstincts" of the theory of human nature, "internal saint and external king" as its core value orientation, within sage as the highest official virtue, "honest and clean, prudent, diligent" and "eight kinds of virtues" and "eight-oriented and three-harmony" as the norms of official virtue, "erudition, self-examination, cultivation" as the methods of self-cultivation. This dissertation does the further research of the two sub-systems of the criterion and the ways of official morality.Taking history as a mirror, and full exploration of the significance of traditional culture is the starting point and the ultimate goal of the dissertation. This dissertation extracts the contemporary value of Zeng Guofan’s official ethics thought from the theory, practice, and moral education of the official virtue and cultivation. Based on the connection between Zeng Guofan’s official ethics thought and contemporary anti-corruption, the dissertation sums up the new official virtue as honest, modest, hardworking and devotion to the people, which reflect the new requirements of the anti-corruption in the market environment. At the same time, combining Zeng Guofan’s Official Ethics Thought ideas with the contemporary enlightenment to the country’s civil servants moral education work, it suggests that the mechanism of ideological and political education of civil servants should be reformed and innovated. That is to say, the content of education should be updated from dependent official morality to independent official morality, characterized by prudence and independence. One-way moral instillation should be replaced by interactive ideological communication. The traditional education system combining school, society and family should be updated to the combination of family, school, society and the core of self-education. The approach to education should be an integration of implicit education which is more important and explicit education instead of and instructive explicit education.According to the dialectical relationship between endopathic factors and external factors, the dissertation walks out the meaningless argumentation that either moral determinism or system determinism for thousands of years breaks through the limit of the self-examination of confucianists just as Zeng Guofan and the tendency of only depending on the system. This dissertation brings about relatively original ideas from the point of self-cultivation of officials. It has a certain reference value for the work of leaders’moral cultivation and official moral education.
