Under the new era, the ideological and political education for college students is facing challenges and opportunities; therefore, the innovation of ideological and political education model for college students is becoming imperative. This study is based on the current situation of college students’ ideological and political education research and practice, mainly using the literature research, historical analysis, comparative study, multidisciplinary research and qualitative research methods, explore the basic problem of ideological and political education model innovation, and this study will be dedicated to building an ideological and political education model for innovative universities, enriching and developing the theory of ideological and political education, and providing the guidance with clear objectives to the innovative practice of ideological and political education, so as to pursue the comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development in university education in order to strengthen the actual effect of ideological and political education, realize the sustainable development of college students.This study, starting from the characters of the innovation of ideological and political education model for college students, that is, its openness, scientific nature, diversity, equality, life nature and unity, provides the theoretical basis for the innovation of ideological and political education model for college students. The ideological and political education for Chinese college students experiences several periods including mobilization model to serve the revolutionary war, thought reformation model to serve the primacy of politics, the stagnation model in the great frustration period, instillation model at the beginning of opening-up and reform, the comprehensive education model of the combination of education, management, services and culture. Although with great achievements, these models have defects including lagged idea, simple content, rigid method, backward system and low professional level. Referred to the research of the related education history from foreign countries, this study suggests that the innovation of ideological and political education model for Chinese college students should broaden the education content, emphasize the implicit education and have Chinese characteristics. This study indicates there are three motivation aspects of the innovation of ideological and political education model for Chinese college students including nine transmutations of college students’ideological and psychological behavior, six transitions of the role of higher education institutions during the social transition period, and three development challenges faced by ideological and political education. The motivations explain the necessity of the innovation of ideological and political education model for college students. The innovation of ideological and political education model for college students should insist on the combinations of counseling and guidance, theory and practice, education and self-education, internationalization and nationalization, dominance and diversity and the unification of autonomy and socialization. The innovation of ideological and political education model for college students should focus on objectives to achieve equality in education main body and the accuracy of the education target, the openness of content and diversity of way, the unity of process and scientific of evaluation. Under the guidance of the basic directions and principles for model innovation, building up the ideological and political education comprehensive education model of comprehensive quality, contract management, social support, consulting, development and cultural education mode. Finally, this study suggests constructing the new mode of the ideological and political education should base on five aspects of the implementation approach those are the choice of education target selection, education content selection, education method selection, education process selection and evaluation feedback mechanism construction.
