In the past two decades, the growth and structure of China’s iron and steelproduction and consumption changed dramatically and rapidly. The change has posedgreat resource, energy, and environmental challenge, and to large extent, restricted thesustainable development of China’s iron and steel industry. The quantitative analysisof the stocks and flows of the iron and steel is of great significance to the promotionof the sustainable utilization of the iron and steel.Based on the substance flow analysis framework at national level, thisdissertation serves as a first attempt to characterize the anthropogenic iron cycle inChina, and provides a guiding a framework for the rest of the quantitative analysis.Based on the stock and flow model, this dissertation has carried out anexplorative and comprehensive analysis of substance flow and value flow at nationallevel, quantitatively characterized substance flow of iron from life cycle perspective, and draw outline of static snapshot of China national iron substance flow in2011. Outof the data from1991to2011, a variety of iron flows and its structure changes withinthe China economy were quantified and assessed. Study found: in2011, a total of911.941million tons of iron through various forms to enter China’s economic andsocial system, the domestic iron ore accounted for51%,49%by foreign imports ofiron ore, crude steel, steel scrap, pig iron and other forms of supply. In China in2011,34.697million tons of iron was exported in the form of steel, and368.9million tonsof iron was loss in selecting and smelting iron, crude steel and scrap steel recyclingprocess. Except for export abroad iron in various forms and the iron loss in theprocess of production, net increase of China’s social inventory was529.783milliontons in China in2011. From1991to1991, all kinds of iron products production andexport in our country have experienced a process of growing year on year. From thepoint of view of whole life cycle, our country is a net importer of iron and total netimports are growing. Through a further analysis of entropy that is based on thematerial flow analysis results, a statistical entropy change curve of2011China’s iron circulation is described. The relative entropy change rate in2011China’s whole steellife cycle is minus38.69%, this means that the concentration of ferrous material isbeing enhanced after a life cycle. On the basis of substance flow routes and in combination with the transformationpath of resource utilization, this dissertation tracks and portrays the value changecycle of iron element, detects the potential improvement links and the mechanism ofvalue transformation to provide the useful information for carrying out the "WasteMinimization" policy which is related with technological process and technicalinnovation.
