Architcture and design are the critical links in the product family value creationprocess. Optimization idea and technique are the important basis and the coreframework of the architecture and design. The past researches on the optimization ofthe product family focus on the common single-level optimization problem. But thestructure characteristics of the product family lead to the hierarchical and associatedstructure of the optimization problems. In this dissertation the hierarchicaloptimization prolem in design of product family is described. Then a wholemethodology framework for solving this problem is presented. Finally two examplesare given to demonstrate the effectiveness. The main works of the dissertation are asfollowing:Firstly, a new problem is discussed: the hierarchical and associated relationshipexisting in design of product family is described according to the structure of productfamily. Then a two-dimensional analysis model is proposed taking the product familystructure and optimization objective as the two dimensions. Sequently the varioustypes of the hierarchical optimization problems existing in design of product familyare analysed based on the two dimensions.Secondly, the whole methodology framework for solving the hierarchicaloptimization problem is presented. The hierarchical optimization problem existing indesign of product family is analysed and a whole methodology framnework forsolving the problem is presented, including problem description,2D analysis model,conceptual model, mathematical model, model solution and result analysis. Theseprocesses are discussed respectively.Thirdly, the numerical methods applied in the construction and solution of thehierarchical optimization model are studied. This section is a deep and expansionaldiscussion focusing on the construction and solution of the mathematical model. Theapplication of Response Surface Method and Finite Element Analysis are discussed.Fourthly, the numerical method based on response surface fitting lower-leveloptimal function is proposed. This section is a deep and expansional discussionfocusing on the model solution in the framework. For the characteristics of thehierarchical optimization model of the product family two numerical methods for solving the bilevel programming based on response surface method are proposed.Finally, two application examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness ofthe methodology framework. A platform-customization hierarchical optimization ofthe gear speed reducer family which is widely used in the industrial field and aproduct-attribute hierarchical optimization of the micro-displacement mechanism usedin the ultra-precision instrument are presented to demonstrate the methodologyframework proposed.
