| Acupuncture is an ancient traditional Chinese treatment with an empirical basis. This study was done to evaluate the effect of follicular phase acupuncture on anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) concentrations in PCOS women who undergoing In vitro fertilization and the effect on assisted reproduction outcome. One hundred and two infertile PCOS patients aged20-40years were prospectively recruited for this study from Union Hospital (Assisted Reproduction Center):33patients received follicular phase acupuncture according to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine (interventional group),69patients without acupuncture (non-interventional group). It showed no significant effect on AMH concentrations as serum and follicular AMH concentrations in interventional group were (3.68±1.25,7.46±2.36respectively) versus (3.59±1.37,7.84±2.10respectively) in non-interventional group. Serum progesterone and estradiol levels on day of giving HCG, serum progesterone and estradiol levels on day of oocyte pick-up were significantly lower in interventional group than that in non-interventional group.Number of embryo transferred patients, implantation rate, clinical and ongoing pregnancy rates were significantly higher in interventional group. It was concluded that follicular phase acupuncture has a positive effect on the outcome of assisted reproduction in PCOS by increasing clinical and ongoing pregnancy rates and regulating fertility hormones but it exhibits no effect on AMH concentrations. |
