With the aim that "Stones from other hills may serve to polish jade of this one" and through the development of recognizing intangible cultural heritage protection in Japan, the paper reveals the internal and external causes of Japan’s taking the lead in protecting intangible cultural heritage in the world as well as the core that should be adhered to during the protection. In comparison with the current situation of intangible cultural heritage protection in China, the findings provide reference for the future implementation of intangible cultural heritage protection., precaution of making protection policies and so on. The paper also introduces the procedure and the social system of intangible cultural heritage protection in Japan after the war so as to provide reference for developing ways of protecting intangible cultural heritage suiting the local conditions all over China. So far the domestic introduction and analysis on intangible cultural heritage in Japan have mainly focused on the interpretation of the relevant policies and laws of cultural property protection in Japan and the introduction about the protection of single project. In line with the idea that "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime", the paper is the first one to reveal the reason that Japan made these policies and laws and their applicability from the deeper point of view of national aesthetic standard, customs, belief and so forth.
