Study On National Revival Of The Revival Monthly

With Chinese situation changing after September18th Incident, the Revival Monthly started publication on June,1932.It served for assembling more people with lofty ideas and making them build their country and society. And it aimed to study the plan of building to be suitable with modern needs. Meanwhile, it discussed the way to national revival in terms of national conditions. So the idea of national revival is one of most important contents on the Revival Monthly. The thesis’s core was political discourses on the Revival Monthly. It studied the idea of national revival and tried to reveal the characteristic of the idea of national revival. In this way, it exhibits some aspects of the thoughts’ trend of national revival in1930s. Furthermore, it improved the research of Chinese history of modern thought and culture.This paper consists of three major parts:preface, body and conclusion. The first chapter is the preface, which explains the purpose of the thesis and retrospects the study about the thesis before. In addition, it introduces research approach and its major innovation and drawbacks. Chapter I presents a summary of "Revival Monthly" in1930s, such as its purpose, edit and publishing, author group and social impact. It provides a cognitive basis for following chapters. Chapter II expounds the starting point of national revival, which was psychological building. Psychological building was regard as the starting point of national revival, the prerequisite of material construction, the basic way of national revival on the Revival Monthly. It showed that spiritual power played an important part in national revival. In addition, the chapter points out that the thoughts of national revival on the "Revival Monthly" embodied some aspects, such as psychology, politics, economy, cultural education, which is a complete scheme of national revival. It shows that psychological building was regard as the starting point of national revival, political building as a key point, economic construction as a central task, cultural education as a main method in the scheme. In all these respects, political building was in an important position on national revival, which was regarded as the prerequisite and could solve all problems on the Revival Monthly. Chapter IV and V mainly study the interaction between the Revival Monthly and the Constitutional Movement and Fascism thoughts after the September18th Incident. They are important political contents on the Revival Monthly. Chapter VI mainly studies the Revival Monthly made its own choice for the political way which is powerful politics on the basis of adjusting ideal and reality. Chapter Ⅶ mainly compares the thoughts of nation revival on the Revival Monthly and the National Renaissance. Both of them mainly emphasized nationalism, which are results of intellectuals devoting themselves to homeland. In addition, the thoughts of national revival on them meant that Chinese intellectual constructed a modern national country with attaching to traditional culture. So some of thoughts inherited from Chinese traditional thoughts and other draw lessons from western experiences. The Revival Monthly emphasized particularly on national revival in practical aspect and agreed that powerful politics and authoritarian politics had returned to the model of meritocracy. Thus, it interacted more with official thoughts. However, the National Renaissance emphasized particularly on national revival in theoretical aspect and argued amended democracy. In fact, their arguments were very similar. Powerful politics and amended democracy contains some marks of traditional politics. So both kinds of national revivals are characteristic of conservatism. The conclusion assesses the value and significance of national revivals’thoughts on the Revival Monthly. The movement of national revival resulted from nationalism and ideology because of national and culture crisis. The Revival Monthly’s arguments were suitable for the needs of modern society. Meanwhile, those arguments were characteristic of compromise. Because not only did it try to construct the ideologies of national country, but also it wanted to develop. So the revival scheme couldn’t get rid of the trammels of traditional culture.
