Design Strategy From Traditional Craft To Digital Craft

Along with the development of industrialization,"less is more","form follows function" and other concepts have become the key theories in the field of industrial design.These theories affect each process of manufacturing including modeling design,structural analysis,production,assembly,etc.They also highlight a range of issues that have come with the explosive growth of industrial world,such as environment deterioration,wasting of resources and ecological damage.Vice versa,traditional craft,the earliest design activities,follows the natural law which minimizes the resources to achieve maximum efficiency.As a result,intensive abroad research regarding hybrid craft which inspired by traditional techniques have been conducted for the past few years.The researchers are seeking the balance between modern design and resource degradation based on computer aided techniques.In domestic,research on traditional craft in the area of design has attracted increasing attention.This thesis proposes a new design strategy to seamlessly combine traditional craft with digital craft relying on numerous of craft resources in our country.Digital craft which presented as a digital design method in this thesis integrates the advantage of traditional technology and advanced manufacturing technology to develop a digital platform to support daily creative activities.The process of practicing on computer aided craft and the achievements from all activities have revealed the operation mechanism of digital craft.It provides a new idea for the development of traditional technology in modern manufacturing,as well as it lays a foundation for developing customized materials,structures and forms of products.The main contents of this thesis are as follows:(1)Research on the possibility and limitation from traditional craft to digital craft:Through personal experiment,resource collection,literature review and so on,this thesis may grasp the research presents,progresses and opportunities within these two areas as far as possible.Regarding to the discussion of universality and individuality for these two areas,it is necessary to consider the possibility and limitation of the traditional technological upgrading,and also consider the possibility and limitation of the digital innovation process itself.(2)Research on the way upgrading from traditional craft to digital craft:It includes the methods,techniques and materials which prompt the activity to achieve more advantages.Innovation opportunities from traditional craft need to be specially focused on during the process of features upgrading,rather than the process of digital copying.(3)Research on the reasons of developing digital craft from the perspective of traditional craft:This thesis will discuss more about the advantages and values of traditional craft features can be realized in digital craft activities.Based on the above research content,the main contributions of this thesis are as follows:(1)Contribute to methodology:Reflecting on the contents of traditional craft and digital craft,this thesis presents a comprehensive approach by integrating design,craft and digital technique to provide a novel strategy for innovative practices,as well as for upgrading in the field of craft design.(2)Contribute to cultural heritage:This thesis provides valuable experience through a large number of design activities for the process of cultural heritage.The practical cases held by the author,such as hands-on craft,emerging digital craft and interactive design,further prove that the knowledge and experience from traditional culture can be still driving innovation in the modern industrial world.(3)Contribute to design innovation:Aims to support daily creative activities,this thesis provides a range of design ideas and implementation platforms for DIY practices.The findings gained from these studies serve as a valuable reference to further explore in the field of digital craft and design practice.
