Part oneEfficacy of BA, MTA, CH as direct pulp capping materialsObjective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dental pulp responses of Bioaggregate(BA), mineral trioxide aggregate(MTA) and caldum hydroxide(CH) when used as pulp-capping materials in rat teeth.Materials and Methods:Rats were randomly sacrificed at O,7,14,days after direct pulp capping with CH, MTA and BA. Maxillary segments were obtained and routinely prepared for histological analysis. The data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. Results:There were significant differences in inflammatory response and formation of dentin bridge scores between the groups (P<0.05). Statistical evaluation of inflammatory response showed that BA group and MTA group were significantly different from CH group separately with a higher inflammatory cell response and less formation of dentin bridge (P<0.05) whereas no significant differences were detected between BA group and MTA group (P>0.05).Conclusion:These findings showed that BA, MTA, CH are promising materials for vital pulp therapy. The results demonstrated that BA and MTA had more favourable effects on the pulps responses compared to CH. Part twoThe expression of interleukin-23in experimental periapical lesionsObjective:To investigate the expression of interleukin (IL)-23, a new member of the IL-12family, in experimental periapical lesions.Materials and Methods:Periapical lesions were induced in Wistar rats by occlusal surface pulp exposure in mandibular first molars. The rats were randomly sacrificed0,7,14,21,28,35,42and56days after pulp exposure. The jaws that contained the first molars were obtained and routinely prepared for radiographic, histological, enzyme histochemical, immunohistochemical and double immunofluorescence analyses. Data were analysed by one-way analysis of variance and Pearson correlation test. Results:The number of IL-23-positive cells increased from day7to day35, and then gradually decreased. The number of osteoclasts increased and peaked on day14, and then gradually decreased from day21to day56. A significant positive correlation existed between the number of IL-23positive cells and the size of bone resorption in periapical lesions from day7to day56(r=0.900, p<0.01).Conclusion:IL-23can be observed and may be associated with inflammatory response and bone resorption in periapical lesions.
