Chinese Family Sagas From 1990s From The Perspective Of Modernity

Chinese family sagas from 1990s have their own unique features in the history of Chinese modern and contemporary literature.There are a large number of literary works in this period which are colourful and influential.The rise of family sagas stems from their own literary,social and historic values;family saga as a particular literary genre is able to convey and internalize the family dream with the special national mindset.Besides,family sagas from 1990s are closely bound up with modernity.The development of modernity and Chinese people' s exploration of modernity lead Chinese writers to surveying the ups and downs of family and the modernization of the nation and the individual.Therefore,family sagas from 1990s form their unique cultural and aesthetic features.This thesis is to research into the overall situation of family sagas from 1990s from the perspective of modernity,aiming to interpret the social,cultural and ideological features in these literary works as well as the ideological and artistic value and the line of development.This thesis consists of three parts,introduction,major part and conclusion.The Introduction includes the position of modernity for family sagas from 1990s,overall situation,objectives and framework of this research.The first chapter illustrates the historic origin and development of Chinese sagas from 1990s through social,historical and cultural context,including the specific background of 1990s and the rise of family sagas,the outline of family sagas at home and abroad,and the summary of writing family sagas from 1990s.The second chapter mainly discusses the three major themes in Chinese family sagas from 1990s,including family themes which shows the inevitable process of family system from rise to fall in history,commercial theme which reveals the inevitable destiny of national commerce from rise to fall in history and revolutionary theme which presents Chinese revolution in the first half of 20th century and the reflection on revolution.The third chapter is to discuss the three representative figures in Chinese family sagas from 1990s,including feudal parents,the eldest son of the family and females,who encounter unprecedented challenges,have different choices and destinies in the fall of the family and the process of modernization.The fourth chapter is to interpret the narration of Chinese family sagas from 1990s based on three models,tragedy,epic and legend.Tragedy shows the antinomy and dilemma of human nature,the conflict between moral and desire and the karma of individual and history;epic is to show the dual perspective of history and individual in family sagas based on individual.Legend shows legendary figures and stories to add to the mystery of works.The Conclusion is to look ahead the future of Chinese family sagas based on the introduction and the analysis of the major part.
