It has been nearly 20 years since Hong Kong's sovereignty was restored by the People's Republic of China in 1997.The interaction between Hong Kong,which as a former colonial city,and the socialistic Mainland China is preliminary in this period.Meanwhile,after 2000,the new era in human history begins.The enhanced globalization trend,the rapid development of information technology,and the wide dispersion of post-modern thoughts,both have a far-reaching effect on Hong Kong's society and culture.With over one hundred years' history,a new transformation of Hong Kong cinema is under a different historical and humane condition after 1997.This study has selected Hong Kong cinema as a channel to analysis its historic stage.The richness,maturity,artistry and typicality of Hong Kong cinema,could provide a great research value.Additionally,film performance is kind of visual image of art,which can demonstrate human beings directly.The performance in Hong Kong cinema has presented the specific situation of this city and citizen.This study of the performance art in Hong Kong cinema after 1997,will focus on body performance and identity performance.There into,body is the instrument of human being,which responds to our living condition and how we feel.Meantime,identity tells us the relationship with the outside world,which reveals behavioral norms and who we are.The first part of this essay would use the word ‘In-between' to describe the situation of time,space,film industry and local culture,and elaborate the periodic division of Hong Kong cinema of this period(1997-2012).The second part of this essay would focus on body performance,and mainly falls into three major categories: aesthetical body performance,body performance under power,mismatching body performance.During this part,the perception and ideology of subjects in Hong Kong cinema would also be discussed.The third part of this essay would centre on identity performance.It mainly has three major angles: political,social community and spatial-temporal.This part would also deliberate that,the performance of Hong Kong cinema displays the rationality of people whom belonged to different communities.The fourth part of this essay would analyze the combination of body performance and identity performance.Finally,it will give some examples about a few typical actors and masterpieces.This part will explore deeper humanistic value through close reading.
