This paper centers on the overseas dissemination of modern art,an issue that has been seldom discussed in previous modern art research.Within the larger question of dissemination, this paper will focus specifically on art exhibitions.Through the examination and study of the overseas dissemination of modern art during the Republican period(1911-1949),this paper attempts to present how Chinese modern art actively responded to the changes that resulted from the West's impact.Art exhibitions were important symbols of the shifts in modern art.Art exhibitions were the inevitable results of the clear appeals and goals of individual artists, art groups,or even the state,at a specific time, place, and historical context. The occurrence and development of modern art exhibitions in China were closely related to the history of Chinese modern art,but they were also tightly linked to China's attempts to modernize.Against the unique background of the Republican period, some art exhibitions were given the important mission of shaping China's artistic and national image. This paper centers on the questions around the overseas dissemination of art during the Republican period.Which forces were actively invested in the overseas dissemination of Chinese art? What kinds of artworks were exported in this dissemination process? How did these art exhibitions and artworks construct Chinese art and China's national image? What effects did these events have? What historical significance did these events have and what experience can be drawn from them? This paper does not simply begin with the historical facts of the exhibitions that disseminated Chinese art abroad;the paper also attempts to transcend the events themselves to engage in a deeper discussion of these important events from the higher perspectives of the history of cultural development and artistic exchange between China and the rest of the world.Through a comprehensive analysis of these exhibitions, the paper attempts to extract from the tangled morass of history just how these dissemination events collectively constructed Chinese art and the national image of China.By answering these questions, the paper intends to provide a theoretical basis and intellectual resource for the theory and practice of the current cultural strategy for exporting Chinese culture.
