Hu Shi's literary thoughts had distinctive modernity. The so-called "modernity",refers to the nature and characteristics of modern society,the basic connotation is the spirit of subjectivity. The so-called subjectivity is refers to people in a relationship with the natural,social attain the position of a subject. As a kind of spiritual strength that had promoted human society into the modern world, it originated in the Western Renaissance and Enlightenment. Affected by social trends since the late Qing Dynaty,Hu Shi had long been some modern ideas and values orientation. After 1910, Hu Shi had traveled far away to study in the United States seven years, which made him had more comprehensive and in-depth understanding and experience for Western modernity ideology and value orientation. Hu Shi was a man profoundly affected by the Chinese traditional culture too. He was born in a family that strongly believed the Confucian tradition, abided by the code of Confucianism conduct, had steeped in traditional Confucian classics since childhood. When had been studying in the United States seven years, he had done not forget to continue to study hard classics of Chinese traditional culture, this made Hu Shi profoundly affected by the Chinese traditional culture. Thus, modern Western culture and Chinese traditional culture were all a profound impact on Hu Shi, this was the modernity context of formation of Hu Shi's literary thoughts.Hu Shi had distinctive historical evolution of concept. He believed that the history of human society was evolved from junior to senior, from the savage to the civilization bit by bit. This concept had distinct reflected in his literary thoughts. In his view, an era had a literature of its times. In terms of literary form, he said, "in the history of the ' literary revolution ' was full of the revolution of literary tool"; in terms of literary content, he thought, the writer of today should "not simply imitate ancient people", "but should depict the true reality of this society now". This concept of Hu Shi,was mainly the result influenced by the theory of evolution of the modern Western, but also with the impact of the traditional Chinese concept of evolution to him about.Hu shi had distinct liberal stance. He called on people to strive for a freedom and democracy,called on society fully to accommodate individual freedom,to take good care of the development of personality; he also believed that tolerance was the root cause of freedom, no tolerance, no freedom could be said. He also advocated social and political reform in peace gradual way. Hu shi's this stance had distinct reflected in his literary thoughts. Both in his literary creation, and in his literary criticism, he vigorously advocated freedom, democracy and tolerance, advocated social and political reform in peace gradual way. This stance of Hu Shi, was mainly the result influenced by the liberalism of the modern Western. but also with the impact of the traditional Chinese concept of freedom to him about.Hu had a distinct humanism spirit. He attached great importance to the value and significance of life, advocated the spirit of optimism,called for a sound individualism,put the man as the root of the world everywhere, respected people, cared people,considerated person, sympathied for the vulnerable groups, encouraged and cared for latecomers, rescued people in adversity. Hu shi's this spirit had distinct reflected in his literary thoughts. In his literary creation, he mourned those lives lost ,criticized those pessimistic disappointment, and easily gave up lives,praised the people with benevolence, sympathied for for those vulnerable, all were the reflection of his humanism spirit. In his literary criticism, he advocated "human literature", he asked the new literature should be in the vernacular as a tool, writed new ideas, new spirit,called for the creation of "living literature" and "true literature", for the eradication of"dead literature. and "false literature", these were just the reflection of humanism spirit. This spirit of Hu Shi,was mainly the result influenced by the humanism of the modern Western, but also with the impact of the traditional Chinese spirit of humanistic to him about.Hu Shi had a distinct scientific evidence of attitude. He had always been advocating scientific evidence, vigorously promoted the scientific outlook on life,advocated the scientific evidence of the attitude and approach to treat social life. Hu shi's this attitude had distinct reflected in his literary thoughts. In his literary creation,he criticized religious superstitions, promoted the scientific outlook on life, and try to vernacular poetry creation.boldly with the scientific evidence of the attitude. In his literary criticism, he attached great importance to the logical thinking and rational analysis, attached great importance to speak with the facts and evidence. He had independent thoughts, dared to question the literary critics, and hypothesised boldly,proposed his own view, tried to objective and fair evaluation of the success or failure of writers, not beautify, not hidden the shortcomings and errors, etc. This was just a reflection of the scientific evidence of the attitude. This attitude of Hu Shi, was mainly the result influenced by the scientism of the modern Western, but also with the impact of the traditional Chinese Positive attitude to him about.The above four aspects of Hu Shi's literary thought,namely historical evolution of literary concept, liberalism of literary stance, humanistic care of literary spirit,scientific evidence of literary attitude all had distinct modernity, were China's pursuit of modernization since the late Qing Dynaty and early Republic as a result, reflected Hu Shi's modernity ideology and value orientation.
