With the 21st century beginning, the process of global economy integration and informatization speeds up further. The market economy system is becoming more complete day by day. The fierce competition pattern of private enterprises together with the sate-owned and foreign-invested ones has begun to form. In the worldwide market, the Chinese private enterprises have to face more complicated and serious competition situation. In 2008, the global financial and economic crisis from sub-prime crisis in the United States has brought great shocks, Chinese private enterprises have met with unprecedented severe situation with the complex and changeable external business environment. All happenings have brought unprecedented challenges to the Chinese private enterprises with only more than 30 years of development history. How to start the second business and to transform and promote successfully, how to get rid of the fate of the "short-life"and how to adapt to the fast-changing business environment, have already become important problems to be solved for Chinese private enterprises. Whether to solve those problems successfully or not concerns the vital interests of healthy and sustainable development of private enterprises themselves, the stable development of the national economy, even the whole situation of the healthy and stable development of the society.This paper mainly focuses on the adaptability of the Chinese private enterprises. It theoretically studies the forming elements, driving factors and impact of adaptability on the enterprise business performance based on the complex adaptive system theory by John H. Holland and the related literatures. This paper also tries to survey Chinese enpterprises by questionnaire and test the theoretical hypothesises and models empirically.This paper introduces Michael Hammer's double systems as basic research system for adaptability, analyses the forming process of adaptability with the definition of adaptability based on the complex adaptive system theory and draw that environment sense, reorganization and environment response are three forming elements of adaptability. This paper explains the basic ideas of adaptability formation by reorgnizing surface business systems to adapt to the external environment change under the government of the deep system of adaptation. Based on the theoretical analysis, this paper puts forward the research hypothesis and builds the second order measurement model of private enterprise adaptability. By sampling and questionnaire surveying and data analyzing with SPSS and AMOS, the research results show that the hypothesis and model get the data support.This paper concluds the essence of innovation and culture with the relevant literature review and summary, establishes the internal relationship between innovation, culture and the forming elements of adaptability of private enterprises, and explores the driving effect on the adaptability, then to proposes the hypothesis and model of innovation and culture driving private enterprise adaptability. By sampling and questionnaire surveying and data analyzing with SPSS and AMOS, the results show that the hypothesis and model are tested by the empirical datas.This paper indicates consistency between the adaptation and its influence on performance.The adaptability causes reorgization in the business system through three forming elements and adapt to the external environment continuously. During the adaptation, the three component elements of adaptability creates affect on the performance. This paper constructs affecting model and proposes hypothesis that the three component elements of adaptability have remarkable positive impact on performance and the unpredictability and conditionality of external business environment have moderating effect. By sampling and questionnaire surveying and SPSS hierarchical regression analysis, the results show that the environment sense, reorganization and environment response have remarkable positive impact on the performance and the moderating effect hypotheses are partially verified.The research conclusions about three basic problems should have positive meanings for the theoretical research of enterprise adaptability and the practice for adaptability promotion of Chinese private enterprises adaptability.
