Research on the influencing factors of corporate social responsibility(CSR)in a developing country context with special reference to the extractive organization in Liberia is put-forward.Corporate social responsibility in Liberia is progressively becoming a priority as the country has become the home to multinational companies seeking mineral exploration. The complexity of the environment and the state of development has uncovered the need for sustainable development and community empowerment.Company are seen as hope in the midst of little government attention and institutional breakdown. For extractive organization to catch up with such expectation it will require CSR improvement through understanding their organization dimensions to improve their performance to affect society and maintain profit. Therefore, performance improvement is at the core of extractive actors because of their operational nature.CSR in this facet is considered a crucial issue not only because of the complexity of these social, economic and political environment in which companies operate, but also because of the many social and environment impacts which business activities have on the Liberian society. These has been written and argue that firms should behave more ethically and responsible to respond to societal problems,on the contrary, numerous of evidence suggests that there has been lack of consensus on the nature of the responsibilities which a company should assume in a given society.Additionally, organizations are at serious risk if communities feel disenchanted by their action or fail in their expectation. To engage in CSR holistically organization needs to measure their performance for better improvement in a small and devise cultural certain.Hence, the excellent theory, manager theory, relational theory, stakeholder theories and system structure theories are critically examined through organization dimension such as leadership,People,Policy and strategy, partnership and resources and process to provide insights on how they combine influence society results in the Liberian extractive industry. These interaction are major concern to the development of corporate social responsibility model and identifying their influence which is fundamental to this research study.Using an empirical interpretative based exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling, this study examined 50 firms operating in the Liberia extractive industry. The research determines the interaction and influence of these variables on organization CSR improvement in Liberia. The research further describes the current CSR issues through a descriptive analysis.Findings from this study suggest that the current form of the CSR agenda practiced by the case study companies in Liberia is largely guided by instrumental rationality rather than the normative perspective. The perspective is consider by some CSR theorist to be associate with the CSR agenda pursued by companies in the developing countries. As such, this viewpoint can be understood to have a profound influence on the extent to which these companies make decisions about CSR initiatives and performance they pursue as part of their CSR agenda in Liberia. This study makes the following contributions to the wider CSR literature.Firstly,it has provided an empirically based investigation of the CSR agenda in Liberia, and has directly contributed by developing an in-depth understanding of the nature of CSR in a developing country context;an area which is currently under-researched.Specifically,it has not only provided insights into managerial and stakeholders‘ perceptions about CSR and about CSR drivers, but has also attempted to explore the interaction and influence between organization dimensions which the case study companies pursued.Secondly, this study pushes the normative frontier by showing that stakeholder engagement can be strategic, and can be used by companies in developing countries to pursue long-term corporate interests. It has done so by showing that corporate stakeholder salience patterns are a reflection of a series of complex interactions between instrumental influences(business case)and industry influences on firm. Finally,by having a combined focus on the stakeholder and the enlightened self-interest theories, this thesis has addressed the dearth of CSR research that draws insights from both perspectives in order to have a better understanding of variations in corporate orientations towards societal issues.
