Research On The Academic Genealogy And Academic Tradition Of Chinese Subatomic Physicists

This paper systematically combed the formation and development of academic genealogy of Chinese subatomic physicists,showed the macrostructure of the academic genealogy of subatomic physicists of China,especially high energy particle physicists.Tracing the source,observing the shape and exploring the changes,the paper discussed the characteristics and influencing factors of the genealogy at different stages,analysed the current situation of Chinese subatomic physicist groups and explored the relationship between academic genealogy and discipline development.Based on these works,from research and spiritual perspectives,it discussed the academic tradition of Chinese subatomic physicists and proposed the conclusions after comparing it with Japan and British traditions.The main contents of this paper include the following:First,it traced the process of "pre-genealogy" established by physics pioneers who returned from abroad in the first half of twentieth century.On weak foundation,they started physics teaching,scientific research and institution establishment and formed a certain size groups.Among growing number of physicists,the focus was put on modern physicists groups and their initial form of academic genealogy was studied.With combing the formation of physicists groups in China,it tried to reveal the difference and connection between academic genealogy and the "pre-genealogy",and the reason why early academic genealogy was not inherited.Second,it overviewed the establishment of national research institution and the growth of physicist groups of subatomic physics after the founding of the People's Republic of China;it investigated the discipline and academic genealogies of all branches of subatomic physics in the Atomic Energy Research Institute,CAS.Special emphasis was put on the Atomic Energy Research Institute,which was called "old hen" of Chinese nuclear industry because of its important contribution in deriving and supporting the establishment of nuclear science and technology agencies in China,the development of some key universities' subatomic physics teams was also discussed.Through investigating various subatomic physics teams in colleges,universities and research institutions,the paper revealed the "genealogy" of subatomic physics research institutions and base camp of Chinese subatomic physicist academic genealogy.Third,through the investigations of first generation of subatomic physics,the paper sorted out more than 30 persons worked in nuclear and particle physics fields as pioneers and founders of subatomic physics discipline in China and discussed the important role they had taken in building academic teams of their units;after macroscopically elaborating the academic genealogy of China nuclear physicists,it summarized the most typical academic traditions of China nuclear physicist as self-reliance,hard struggle and promoting discipline by accomplishing specific tasks;it also pointed out that the separation of academic genealogy between high-energy particle physicists and nuclear physicists was due to the establishment of academic base camp and the independence of disciplines.Fourth,it examined the foreign sources of academic genealogy of high-energy experimental physicists and theoretical particle physicists in detail.Through combing the formation and development of early academic genealogy,building up the summary statement of academic genealogy,the paper probed the structures of the genealogies and inter-generational relationships,and then discussed the development of the academic genealogy and the new situation occurredin international communication,analyzed the current overall distribution and development of academic teams nationwide.Based on the academic genealogy table,it concluded that academic genealogy of high-energy experimental physicists and theoretical particle physicists in China appeared to be in reticular structure and chain structure respectively,which having some advantages and disadvantages,and with the increasingly frequent international exchanges,their hierarchical structure was more complicated,and the generation division after the third generation has been gradually fuzzy and showed only some relative separation.Fifth,depending on the research on academic genealogy,the paper discussed the academic tradition of high-energy experimental physics and theoretical particle physics from both research and spiritual tradition perspectives.Taken the prominent physicists as headwaters when investigating the academic genealogy with circumstance,it concluded that at the beginning of establishment of high-energy particle physics in China,and under peculiar international and domestic environment of special era,certain spiritual traditions had been formed.These traditions gradually faded out along with the time development,the progress of economic and social environment.As to the research traditions,as a late-development country in science,it hadn't truly formed in China.
