Over the past three decades,the world steel industry research center had opened the China Times at the beginning of this century,from the United States and Europe to Japan and South Korea.Chinese continuous casting technology had made great progress in the past twenty years,but it has some problems in which basic research is not systematic and in-depth,independent sustainable innovation capability is insufficiency.Tundish metallurgy is a special refining technology,which is a key link to ensure the excellent quality in the process of melting and refining steel.The metallurgical effect of tundish is mainly depended on the reasonable flow of molten steel in tundish.Therefore,understanding and controlling the flow behavior of liquid steel in tundish are the key to improve the quality of molten steel.Although the tundish water simulation method have been mature and successful applied,based on the understanding of the internal flow quantification and vortex structure,meeting the Re and Fr similarity criteria at the same time with the room temperature tundish water simulation process and mold and tundish coupled experiment,a full scale continuous casting water simulation experiment platform is established.The experimental platform has modular design,the public function,meeting the different types of tundish water experimental requirements with customized,scalable,portable and scalable.In order to meet the needs of the whole flow field test information,especially considering the average velocity of flow in tundish is low,combining machine vision and image processing technology with PIV technology,the qualitative and quantitative tests of the flow field in tundish are carried out.In this paper,the tundish flow is characterized by the image detection of the particle concentration change of the non contact tundish RTD test system.It has realized the velocity field measurement of the tundish full size and reduced scale water simulation by the experiment platform,which can satisfy the research of the velocity field,vorticity field,RTD and so on.The whole function test is carried out on the physical experiment platform by the study of the flow characteristics in the tundish of the full scale single strand slab tundish and two strand slab tundish.The research shows that the flow characteristic in the tundish is the transient vortex flow which is caused by the fluid-solid interface in the tundish.The vortex scale is about 10mm;the maximum value is 40s-1.More the flow control device can increase the number and intensity of the vortex in the tundish and strengthen the transfer behavior.Through the establishment and practice of the full scale water simulation platform and the flow field details in the tundish,it is indicated that the tundish flow need be discussed in the view of vortex generation and evolution.Based on the experimental platform and the numerical simulation,the design,optimization and application of a six strand billet continuous casting tundish is realized.In this paper,an experimental study on the tundish flow behavior is carried out by combining the advanced experimental design with the modern testing technology.This paper shows the single strand slab tundish,conventional two strand slab continuous casting tundish and the six strand billet continuous casting tundish water simulation experiment and engineering application by the full scale experimental platform and tests the full ffunction of experiment platform,and realizes tundish metallurgy of visual and digital observation and application research based on modern image technology.
