Research On The Inheritance And Protection Of Traditional Brocade Craft Of Li Nationality

The traditional brocade handicraft of the Li people is created in the social production and life activities during the long development and construction of Hainan Island.The LI people have only the language but no writing,and rely on the brocade patterns to record their history and culture.A brocade is a historical picture scroll of the Li people.The traditional brocade craft and its culture play an important role in the culture of Li people.Li brocade became famous in the mainland China early in the Qin and Han dynasties as a tribute to the imperial court.With the development of the society,the brocade technique of Li people gets developed and improved continuously.In the late Song Dynasty and the early Yuau Dynasty,the famous female textile innovator Huang Daopo went to Yazhou City(Shuinan Village in Tianya District of Sanya today)to learn the cotton textile technology from the local Li women.After finishing her study,she returned to her hometown Songjiang Prefecture(Shanghai today)to spread and publicize the cotton textile technology of the Li people,which promoted the development of cotton textile industry in the Jiangnan region.Li brocade technology has made great contribution to the development of China's cotton textile industry.Li's traditional skills of cotton picking,planting,fluffing,spinning,dyeing,weaving and embroidering have a long history.However,in today's society of economic globalization,the living area of Li people in Hainan is under the impact of modern culture and foreign culture,and the accelerating social changes,which has severely impacted traditional brocade technique,making its living space shrink and the living environment deteriorate With the continuous death of the brocade artisans and the aging of the living brocade artisans,the brocade technique was on the verge of extinction.The protection and inheritance of Li brocade art becomes urgent.For this reason,the Li brocade handicraft and its culture have attracted the high attention of the government at all levels and the people of insight from all walks of life.The "traditional spinning,dyeing,weaving,and embroidery skills of Li people" was identified in 2003 by the Ministry of Culture as one of the national top ten pilot national folk culture projects to be protected and one of the firs national intangible cultural heritage by the State Council in 2006 and one of the first “intangible cultural heritage requiring urgent protection by the UNESCO in October 2009”,which has greatly improved the survival and development of the Li brocade and its culture.However,due to the vicissitude of the time and the particularity of the Li brocade handicraft itself,there are still many difficulties and problems in the protection and inheritance of the traditional brocade handicraft of the Li people.This paper studies mainly five aspects of contents: 1)A brief introduction to the Li people and their traditional brocade craft,mainly including the summary of the Hainan island and the Li people,the history of the Li brocade,the status of Li brocade in the Li culture,the modern value of traditional Li brocade,the position of Li brocade in the history of China's textile,and the contribution of Huang Daopo to the cotton textile industry,etc.,so that to expound the significance of protection and inheritance;2)the technological process of Li brocade and its changes.It expounds the raw materials and process flow of the Li brocade,and the evolution and development of the Li brocade along the development of the social economy of the Li people area;3)The Li brocade handicraft and its cultural implication,including the appearance patterns,artistic features,and cultural implication of the Li brocade;4)The inheritance status of the Li brocade;it is concluded that,based on the investigation and analysis on the living environment,the handicraft inheritance,the shortage and crisis of raw materials,the changes of concept,the funds and professionals for protection,and the legislation,etc,the Li brocade is under the impact of the modern industrial culture and has the living environment deteriorated and shrunk and thus the protection and inheritance become urgent without any delay;5)Countermeasures and suggestions are raised.Practical methods and approaches are proposed mainly from the protection principles,laws and policies,protection measures,inheritance mechanisms,research,development,and utilization,etc,in view of the living environment,problems,and challenges of the Li brocade handicraft,so that to provide scientific,rational,and feasible countermeasures and suggestion to the competent governmental agency,with the purpose of passing down and publicizing the Li brocade handicraft and thus injecting folk cultural elements and connotations for the construction of the international tourism island,the free trade zone,and the free trade port of the Hainan Island.
